When you take the world leader in electric hydrofoiling and pair them with the high-performance engineering of Mercury Racing, the result is bound to be record-breaking. The 30-knot Barrier

At the heart of this collaboration between Fliteboard and Mercury Racing is a custom Race impeller. This new impeller has been engineered specifically for high-RPM output, which allows the board to hit a blistering top speed of 30 knots (roughly 34.5 mph). To put that in perspective, most recreational eFoils cruise comfortably at 15-18 knots.

Foiling electric surfboards may have seemed like the ultimate superyacht toy, but wait until you see one of these new Pegasus foilers come flying past your boat.

Developed by Finnish start-up Foil.One, it’s an all-electric single-seater that combines the thrill and excitement of a high-performance foiling craft with the ease and simplicity of a bicycle.

Built entirely out of carbon fibre and with styling inspired by Formula One cars of the 1960s, it is capable of speeds up to 30 knots while flying a couple of feet above the water.

Rides like a bike

The secret of its user-friendly design is a unique analogue foiling set-up that combines steering, balance and ride height in a single intuitive mechanism.

Originally discovered by Japanese foiling pioneer Kotaro Horiuchi over 40 years ago but refined and perfected by Foil.One’s chief designer Eric Smits, it uses a steerable front foil linked to a pair of handles in the cockpit similar to those in a rowing eight or on a recumbent bicycle.

Pull the right hand lever and the whole front strut twists clockwise like a long thin rudder, causing the Pegasus to lean into a tight right turn.

Pull the left hand one and it twists anticlockwise causing it to pop back upright before leaning down into a left turn.

The beauty of this is that it behaves just like a bicycle, so anyone who can ride a bike will get the hang of balancing and steering it within a couple of minutes.

The other key innovation is a ‘surface-sensing wand’ that hangs off the back of the front strut and controls a central elevator flap on the trailing edge of the front foil.

In reality this is a fancy term for a hinged lever with a float at one end linked to a push rod at the other.

When the float makes contact with water, the drag from the water pushes the rod backwards, forcing the flap down and increasing the lift generated by the foil.

Cables link the handles to a carbon-fibre steering arm on top of the front foil

When the float lifts clear of the water, it falls forward again, tilting the flap up and reducing the amount of lift generated.

By constantly touching and then lifting clear of the water, the wand keeps adjusting the foil up and down so the hull stays flying above the water.

The only control the driver has is the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the mechanism to take account of the conditions and limit how high it flies.

The flatter the water, the higher you can ride and the harder you can carve it through the turns – up to a lean angle of 45 degrees.

Silent power

Propulsion comes from a modest 10kW electric motor in the stern linked to a slender shaft running down the rear foil strut to a 90 degree gearbox and propeller.

A small wing-shaped foil just above it serves as both a ventilation plate and a lift generator.

At low speeds, the Pegasus behaves like a small displacement boat with the 1m deep foils acting as stabilising keels, but at 10 knots, the bow lifts clear of the water, followed shortly afterwards by the stern.

A foot throttle controls the speed, while the fixed rear foil can be adjusted manually to account for different driver weights.

Two 5kWh Torqeedo batteries provide the power, giving a run time of up to 2.5 hours at 20-25 knots for a range of around 50nm.

These can be taken out of the boat and charged at home or the whole craft can be lifted onto a trailer and towed behind a car.

Thanks to its lightweight carbon fibre construction, it weighs just 200kg and both foils slide up through the deck when not in use to reduce its draft.

While the colour scheme can be customised, this first one is finished in British Racing Green and Gold as a homage to the legendary 1960s Lotus 49 F1 car raced by the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill.

Foil.One even went to the trouble of creating an entire back story for a fictional British racing driver called Reggie Hawke to help promote the Pegasus.

With a starting price of €109,900 ex batteries and taxes, it will need all the help it can get but for superyacht owners in search of the ultimate toy or waterside dwellers with a penchant for eye-catching gadgets, this revolutionary electric foiler has the style and the technology to reward any early adopters.

And if sales go well, plans are already afoot for a two-seater Pegasus and even a full-sized foiling sportsboat.

Call me old-fashioned but if I wanted to fish out at sea, I’d take a boat. Whatever the reason, as part of its 2025 jetski line-up, Kawasaki has launched a model with sea angling specifically in mind.

A jetski adapted for fishing – not as daft as it may sound

Called the Kawasaki Ultra 160LX-S Angler, and powered by a normally aspirated four-cylinder, four-stroke engine delivering 152hp, it comes fitted with a 7in Garmin Echomap UHD2 which includes a fish-finding sonar while offering navigation from recorded routes. Also installed are a large Orca coolbox positioned to the rear of the craft with built-in fishing rod holders, added floats for stability and for use as footrests while fishing, and a comfortable flat seat.

Founded in 2020, the French company JetCycle started off producing the JetCycle Max, a pedal-powered monohull craft that, with spirited pedalling, would lift clear of the surface and glide along on its hydrofoils.

For 2024, the business has taken that concept and enhanced it considerably to create the E-JetCycle. The first and most obvious change is that the E-JetCycle is a trimaran, with two large sponsons adding a huge amount of stability, as well as allowing a greater foil size.

That makes it quite a substantial vessel at about 3.5m long and over 2m wide, with a weight of 55kg plus the rider – and that’s why the other big change is particularly welcome.

The E in its title refers to the fact that this is a hybrid drive. It still needs to be pedalled, but a 200W electric motor vastly increases your pedal power in the same way that riding an electric bike makes you feel like you’re riding slightly downhill with a tailwind.

Take-off speed is just 5 knots, which means you can be up on the foils yet still within the speed limit of most coastal
rivers and harbours. And once you’re free to push on, maximum speed is 10 knots with a cruising speed of about 8 knots.

Utilising a water-cooled battery system, WaveFlyer claims that it can be recharged in 40 minutes and run for about four hours, with a take-off speed of eight knots and a max speed of 20 knots. The Rogue uses the same hull but with a PWC-style tandem seat and handlebars. Its stats are similar, apart from a slightly higher 22-knot top speed.

Both feature a proprietary W-Foil arrangement, an unusual anhedral-shaped hydrofoil that is naturally unstable and requires fly-by-wire control to achieve stable flight. WaveFlyer claims the idea is similar to that of a modern jet fighter which is inherently unstable and can only be flown by utilising computers. In the case of the WaveFlyers, this results in unusually high manoeuvrability.

Beyond that, dual direct-drive magnet electric propulsion pods of 12.8kW each with ducted or open propellers provide the go, and fully retractable foils mean both vessels can be trailered or beached.

The greatest James Bond ever, in my opinion, is The Spy Who Loved Me. There are so many iconic moments, from the Lotus Esprit powering off the jetty and transforming into a submersible, to the skier flying straight off the side of a mountain and pulling a Union Jack parachute.

But who can forget our hero, played by Sir Roger Moore, heading for the villain’s offshore lair in full naval commander regalia, astride a Wetbike – the debut of the world’s first PWC.

Looking very much like a motorbike with fat skis instead of wheels, Spirit Marine’s Wetbike actually entered production a year later in 1978 – the one seen in the film was a prototype.

Since then, personal watercraft have taken on a very different style, with hulls akin to small boats, but the concept of a motorbike for the water is back once more, courtesy of Searider.

Searider’s latest model is the Searacer, a machine with styling that’s far more Lightcycle from Tron than 1970s James Bond. Dual electric motors produce a combined 33kW (about 45hp) creating over 40 knots of performance with up to 50 minutes of runtime from its removable battery.

It weighs in at 65kg and is available in three colours – white, grey or blue. And in a neat nod to the past, Seasider’s brochure actually includes a black and white photograph of Sir Roger in action astride the original Wetbike.

Yamaha has upgraded almost all of its Waverunner Personal Water Craft for 2024, with nine of its 11-strong fleet featuring modifications and upgrades.

Chief of which is a new 1.9-litre High Output naturally aspirated engine which will be fitted to many of the new jet ski models.

Up 25hp and almost 100cc, Yamaha says it is ‘a quieter, more efficient engine, higher in power and offering more torque’.

There is also a brand-new seven-inch touch screen Connext® display with Security and Enhanced Drive Control Modes – including Economy, Towing, Performance, Comfort and Customisable Drive Modes – which will be fitted to all of the new FX models.

Yamaha’s Waverunner PWC collection is split into three categories. The Cruising range of larger vessels, designed for ‘exploration and adventure’, will get the new engines in its HO models.

There are also new colour schemes, from Dusty Navy to its Limited Edition in Black Solid with fresh new dark orange matte details.

Using lightweight high-tensile fabrics based on kite surfing technology, the smallest 250 model of the EzRaft weighs just 11kg, and measures 80x30x30cm when packed up, making it back-packable.

Its construction means strength, safety and durability are assured while the patented three-tube design requires no heavy structural parts. Even the paddles are telescopic.

We’ve seen shadow boats for carrying superyacht toys and helicopters, amphibious tenders that can drive up the beach to avoid soggy feet, and golfballs made of fish food to allow driving practice from the deck.

Earlier this year I was at the Palma Boat Show, where fit young men were zipping around the marina with ease on Fliteboards – electric surfboards that rise clear of the water on a single spar connected to a hydrofoil.

A couple of days later I was anchored in a quiet cove, relaxing aboard a Princess F70 and watching someone wetly demonstrate that getting the knack isn’t as quick or as easy as those youngsters might have you believe.

New products and even new companies are coming thick and fast as electric surfboards continue to rise in popularity. Latest to hit the market is from brand new company The Kinetic Option, which has just launched its first model, the TKO-001.

At just under 2m it weighs in at a chunky but manageable 20kg thanks to its advanced carbon composite construction. The maximum rider weight is 130kg, or about 20 stone in ‘old money’.

It’s powered by a 12kW liquid-cooled motor for a top speed of about 30 knots, which is not quite as fast as the Mo-Jet we covered last summer, but trust us – when you’re that close to the water, 30-knots is more than fast enough!

Five versions of the Fliteboard Series 3 are available. The basic 5ft8in Fliteboard can handle riders up to 120kg, while the 5ft long Pro variant comes with more options, such as carbon fibre, foot straps and Dual Drive (more on that below).

The 4ft2in Fliteboard Ultra is the lightweight version and is available in the Ultra L version, which includes a taller 80cm mast (the tube that supports the board above the foil) for bigger waves or harder turns. And the 6ft Fliteboard Air is an inflatable version aimed at beginners, with a 60cm mast for easier handling.

As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also launched the Flitescooter, a 7ft version with handlebars, which is meant to be even easier to learn how to efoil.

Flite Jet is also new – it’s the smallest jet propulsion unit available. Smoother and quieter than a propeller, it’s also safer for swimmers and Dual Drive allows you to swap out the jet for a propeller, giving higher speeds and distance.

A new Flitecell Nano, claimed to be the world’s lightest Lithium E4 battery at just 6.2kg, charges in under an hour and gives up to 45 minutes’ ride time. Larger battery options up that to two hours.

Silent Yachts is best known for its large and efficient solar-powered catamarans, but its new baby the Silent Tender 400 is a four-metre, carbon-fibre, rigid-hull planing boat.

Able to carry six people ‘with ease’, it’s small enough to fit on the bathing platform of Silent Yachts’ smallest 60ft powercat but crucially, that carbon-fibre construction means that, at 90kg (excluding motor), it’s also light enough.

Buyers are able to choose between various inboard and outboard propulsion options. Inboard power comes in the form of a 20kW electric water jet, offering extremely low draft and ease of handling as well as the safety benefits of no exposed propeller.

It’s not just about being more considerate to other boat users thanks to its near-silent electric motor; there are other good reasons to choose the Elaqua electric jetski over a noisy ICE version.

Firstly there’s no need to fill and carry cans of petrol. If you have a generator (and you probably do if you have a boat big enough to carry a PWC) you simply charge it from the mothership in about two hours.

Charging up from shore power is even quicker (just 30 minutes) and that will give you a range of about 80 miles. Fear not, ROAM to the rescue! The brainchild of Superyacht Tenders and Toys, working in partnership with Naval Architects Argo Navis, the concept was born from their clients’ “increasing appetite for adventure and the desire to access remote areas in safety, comfort and in the company of their toys!”

As a semi-custom aluminium build measuring 8.5m (just under 28ft) in length (so slightly larger than my entire boat), its catamaran configuration provides plenty of stability and a draft of just 0.6m (2ft), which is handy for getting the Land Rover ashore.

Powered by a pair of Mercury 175hp V6 outboard engines, it’s good for about 28 knots flat-out with a 20-knot cruise.

There are even built-in lifting points that allow you to crane it back aboard the mothership more easily.

One of the most important aspects to come out of the recent rise in the development of electric boats is the need to minimise drag, and one water toy taking advantage of these benefits is the Quadrofoil Q2S.

Looking a little like a sportscar, it features tandem seating for two, an open-sided hull and large hydrofoils that rotate 180° when deployed, avoiding the draft issues of fixed foils.

Driven by a 3.7kW electric motor powered by a pair of 5.2kWh lithium-ion batteries, it will reach speeds of more than 20 knots, but intriguingly, will lift up onto the foils and ‘fly’ above the surface at about 6 knots, meaning that you could fly in speed-restricted areas like the River Dart, for example.

The Quadrofoil range has built in the Solvenian town of Slovenska Bistrica by Austrian solar panel manufacturer Alumero Group since 2015.

The idea behind the Ruckraft is simple. You’re anchored off a lovely beach, you fancy a swim ashore for an ice cream and a wander, but you have no way of taking your clothes, towel, phone and wallet with you.

Cue the Ruckraft! Inflated by simply blowing into it (it takes about 30 seconds), what you end up with is a Lilliputian inflatable dinghy.

We have not seen any electric bikes as achingly hip as this new model from Dutch company Knaap.

Powered by a Samsung lithium-ion 36 volt 21AH battery driving a brushless 250W motor, they’re good for up to 15mph and 86 miles of range.

The frames are aluminium, the lighting is LED and there’s even an LCD display for speed and battery state.

But best of all is the way they look. With chunky tyres on 20-inch rims, Tektro mechanical disc brakes and thick aluminium frames, they look like little motorcycles from the future.

That the world of folding sailing boats is growing larger can only be great news for the motor boat owner who likes to carry toys on board.

A burgeoning range includes flat-nosed collapsable wooden dinghies, RIBs with sailing rigs, the Reverso high performance race boat that can split into thirds and now a catamaran in kit form.

Hailing from La Rochelle, the IZIBoat is light (and narrow) enough to be towed behind an electric bicycle, but large enough to carry up to four passengers weighing up to 260kg.

The development of hydrofoils dates back to 1898. Slightly more recently Bond baddie Emilio Largo attempted to escape using a hydrofoil-equipped motor yacht, the Disco Volante, in the 1965 007 movie Thunderball.

But whilst clearly they are nothing new, the current focus on energy efficiency means that they are certainly à la mode right now. Water is 800 times denser than air, so if you can get your boat out of the water and into the air, it’s a big efficiency win.

One of the latest companies to take advantage of hydrofoiling is Overboat. Its Overboat 150F is an 11ft personal watercraft fitted with an 8kW electric motor.

Foiling technology: everything you need to know about hydrofoils

Fitting foils to powerboats is all the rage, but how do they work and why is foiling back in fashion?

It lifts up onto three auto-regulated ‘T-foils’ once above 10 knots and powers up to a maximum speed of 20 knots with a 15 knot cruise.

Endurance is up to two hours, and there’s a two seater and a smaller, slower Overboat 100F version also available (3.1m LOA, 15-knot top speed).

Overboat claims that its design delivers a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to a similar-sized outboard-powered boat, with the added benefit of zero noise and zero air pollution, plus the ability to cruise in protected inland areas.
