Life afloat brings you into contact with all sorts of equipment – and my fondness for it is evident from the amount of kit I carry on my boats. Naturally then, I closely follow the various kit reviews, not least here in MBY. But every now and then, you come across some boating gear that solves its task in such an innovative way that it’s difficult not to speak up.

The problem

One of my core requirements for boating with Iron Explorer, my Iron 827 Coupé, is that it has to be towable at 80km/h while remaining manageable and practical to handle, despite the weight of a 3.5-tonne trailer.

The bare boat weighs around 1,700kg, but once you add the engine and onboard equipment, plus water and fuel for both engine and heater, you quickly approach 2,400kg. A 3.5-tonne trailer typically allows a payload of about 2,600kg, and I have no intention of exceeding that limit and risking illegal towing.

Over the years, I’ve used several trailers: first for our Flipper 620, then for a Buster Magnum, and later we bought a trailer with an electric winch for Iron Explorer. It worked reasonably well. But the trailer we encountered at Iron Brothers in Mölndal – the one Iron Explorer sat on when I first came to inspect her – was something entirely different.

It was a Norwegian-built trailer from Svela, featuring a simple yet remarkably clever design. The name Svela is from the founder Sverre Larsen. To the best of my knowledge, they have no dealer in Britain, but I feel certain that will change.

The solution

At the rear of the frame sits an exceptionally long cradle, supported by a pivoting axle that tilts as the boat rolls up and down it. But the real stroke of genius lies in the support wheels. They are mounted in pairs on axles that rotate around a tubular shaft, allowing them to adapt to the hull shape.

The boat’s weight is then distributed across many wheels, meaning each wheel carries far less load than on traditional trailers, where most of the weight is concentrated on a few pairs of much harder side rollers and two or three directly under the keel.

On my trailer there are five rows of paired wheels on each side of the keel, which are adjustable in height if the boat has a deeper keel. That’s a total of 28 wheels sharing roughly equal load, making the boat remarkably easy to roll on and off.

Ahead of the main cradle is a smaller cradle built on the same principle, with four wheels mounted in pairs on individual rotating shafts, again adapting perfectly to the hull and adjustable for height. Right at the front sits a conventional bow support, which is adjustable fore-and-aft to achieve the correct weight on the trailer coupling.

There are attachment points for guide poles both fore and aft, but even without them, the winch pulls the boat straight if it comes in slightly off-centre. Perhaps the many low-load wheels help here too but, either way, the difference compared to trailers I’ve used before is really striking.

The trailer comes with an aluminium box housing the winch battery, as well as tie-down straps to secure the boat. It feels genuinely cutting-edge – outstanding in performance, yet elegantly simple in execution – and when that happens, I can’t help but admire it. So when the penny dropped, I sold my old trailer and ordered a new Svela trailer from Norway.

The model I use for Iron Explorer is the Svela B35 MAXE9. It’s rated for boats of up to 32ft, with a payload of 2,565kg and a weight of exactly 3,500kg. And just to underline my satisfaction, when my son Martin later bought his Iron 907, he too ended up with a Svela trailer!

The irony of running a large motor yacht is that even though it’s propelled by a pair of big diesel engines, you still need at least one more to generate electrical power for all its ancillary systems. Not only does this mean running three or even four diesel engines under way, but the constant noise and fumes of the generators at anchor can take the edge off that perfect unspoilt bay you’ve spent so long getting to.

Now, thanks to a new off-the-shelf solution from Norwegian marine technology company Sleipner, that problem could soon be a thing of the past.

Called the Sleipner HPC (Hybrid Power Centre) system, it comprises a pair of 48V DC ‘super-generators’ that run off the main engines’ PTOs (Power Take-Offs), a battery bank to store the power they generate, a Smart Power Controller to manage it and an intuitive User Interface to control it all.

While the idea behind this isn’t new, it’s the first time a single manufacturer has developed a complete integrated system that can take care of everything from the boat’s thrusters and stabilisers to its power generation and management systems. With the sole exception of the battery bank, which the customer can source and specify to suit their needs, it’s all made by Sleipner, promising a seamless user experience and an easier installation process.

Generation game

The heart of the system are the two 48V PTO generators. These are designed to fit onto the standard power take-offs of all major marine diesel engines, with a torque band of 25-120Nm. Sharing much of their internal structure with Sleipner’s electric thruster motors, they use the excess torque developed by the engines to generate electricity.

Such is their efficiency that even with the engines ticking over at idle, each one can generate up to 5kW. At cruising speed that rises to 25kW or 50kW across both engines – enough to charge a powerful 100kWh lithium battery pack in just two hours.

Generating this much power does create a certain amount of unwanted heat so a built-in water cooling system keeps it operating at the correct temperature while an integrated inverter and controller ensures a steady supply of power that can either drive 48V equipment directly or recharge the batteries.

One of the first yards to offer it as a factory fit option is Turkish builder Numarine. Marketed by Numarine as the ‘Mk2 Super Silent Pack’, it enables its latest 88ft explorer yacht, the 27XP, to offer a full night at anchor in complete silence with the air-conditioning and stabilisers running but without the need to run a generator.

The benefits are just as worthwhile during the day, when guests can eat in the cockpit or swim around the boat without the sound and smell of a diesel generator spoiling their enjoyment.

Smart thinking

To make this possible, Numarine has fitted the boat with a high capacity 92.8kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePo4) battery bank linked to Sleipner’s Hybrid Power Centre and a full suite of Sleipner dynamic aids, including 48V DC bow and stern thrusters as well as electrical curved fin stabilisers.

This maximises the efficiency gains as it allows the PTO generators to power them all directly and means the boat can be run without the extra weight and complexity of hydraulics. On the hard top, 5.6kWp of solar panels provide an additional boost to the batteries, extending the time it can spend at anchor in silent mode.

Most boats will still need a conventional generator to avoid the need for running the main engines at anchor if you do ever run low on power, but it should significantly reduce the running hours, fuel consumption and servicing schedules to the benefit of guests and crew. It may also enable the fitment of smaller, lighter generators and improve the weight distribution by relocating the batteries further forward.

Another key function is the system’s ability to prioritise power where it’s needed most. For instance, if you’ve depleted the battery reserves overnight but still need to use the thrusters to manoeuvre out of a tight spot in the morning, it will temporarily shut off power to less essential equipment, such as the water heater or stabilisers. This is all managed automatically through the intelligent HPC Controller and a series of modular smart switches that can be added to at a later date, future proofing it against further modifications.

Verdict

The advent of new technologies such as joystick control, station keeping and zero-speed stabilisers means the demand for both power on board is only getting bigger and yet the pressure to reduce unwanted noise, emissions and fuel consumption is growing just as fast.

For boats in the 60-90ft size bracket, which might previously have opted for hydraulic thrusters and stabilisers and always-on diesel generators, the new Sleipner HPC system offers a genuine alternative.

By replacing the hydraulics with 48V electrics and the diesel gensets with PTO super-chargers and a battery bank, owners can enjoy all the benefits of a fully stabilised, easy to manoeuvre boat and plentiful power on tap without many of the usual drawbacks. Numarine may be the first yard to adopt the new HPC system but it certainly won’t be the last once Sleipner officially launches it this autumn.

Boat batteries have changed over the years. While most of us grew up on a diet of heavyweight lead acid batteries, the likes of which are still commonly used as starter batteries today, these have increasingly been replaced by maintenance-free AGM and gel variants and, in the last ten years, by lithium boat batteries.

Given their natural advantages – lighter weight, higher energy density, deeper discharge, faster charging and longer life – that’s only to be expected. But as lithium battery banks have continued to find their way into homes, cars, campervans and boats in ever greater numbers and for ever more demanding loads, it’s important to understand their merits, their limitations and the continually evolving picture in relation to their proper management.

What is a lithium battery?

“Lithium-ion” is an umbrella term for any rechargeable battery that carries a charge via lithium ions as part of its cells’ electrochemical function. There are various chemistry types available and each comes with its own characteristics and applications. NMC (Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) is often used for electric cars; NCA (Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide) is popular for e-bikes; and at the smaller end of the scale, LCO (Lithium Cobalt Oxide) batteries have become critical assets for portable tech, powering everything from laptops and mobile phones to handheld GPS and VHF units.

But with its capacity for thousands of repeated cycles, its proven stability, its high safety standards and its modest pricing, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄ – often interchangeable in marketing terms with LiFeSO₄) is the go-to lithium variant for boats.

The basic elements of a lithium iron phosphate battery for marine leisure are quite simple. They use 3.2V prismatic (rectangular rather than cylindrical) cells for increased space efficiency. There are four of these prismatic cells (or in larger batteries, sometimes eight) inside a single battery box.

These batteries are used either individually or in a cluster and equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS), which is designed to maintain their stability and maximise their long-term effectiveness by, among other things, detecting the voltage, monitoring the temperature and controlling the rate of charge and discharge.

How do lithium batteries actually work?

Each cell contains a cathode (the positive electrode), on which a layer of paste contains the active cell chemistry that defines the battery type; opposite this is an anode (the negative electrode), which hosts a layer of carbon particles; and between the two is a separator, which guards against short circuit but remains permeable to ions.

All three are immersed in an electrolyte (usually a liquid or gel), which enables the movement of charged ions through the separator and between the two plates. When you charge the cell, charged ions move from the cathode to the anode; and when you discharge the cell, the direction of the ions reverses. While the inherently unstable chemical reaction that enables this movement produces heat as well as energy, that instability is mitigated by means of a passive coating of lithium salts on the carbon particles in the anode region known as the solid electrolyte interface (SEI).

Lithium Iron Phosphate provides between three and five times the energy density of lead acid, which means you can use much smaller, lighter, more compact battery banks to achieve the same capacity. Installed and managed properly, they will also last much longer than lead acid (in excess of ten years) and they’re also more user-friendly.

It’s vital to understand that a lithium battery bank is only as good as the components that protect and charge it

You can discharge them to a far greater degree and you can do that far more frequently than you can a traditional lead acid battery. As a rule of thumb, if you discharge lead acid to more than 50%, you won’t be able to do it more than 100 times. A decent AGM battery might enable that 400 times and a gel battery around 800 times. But a healthy lithium battery will happily do that 3,500 times, which is every single day for at least a decade.

They are also much faster charging; they retain far more of their charge while sitting idle for long periods; and while they are still more expensive, due in part to the additional protection and management components that modern batteries now use, they are (like-for-like) around 75% less expensive than when they first entered the market just over a decade ago.

Is the quality variable?

Yes, very. There are now lots of manufacturers in China and Vietnam that manufacture lithium cells but they’re by no means always identical, either from manufacturer to manufacturer or even amongst a single batch from an individual production line. To express that quality differential, the cells are graded A, B or C.

However, a great many ‘manufacturers’ are in fact assemblers, which means they buy the components and put them together, before branding and exporting them, so tracing and verifying the quality of the parts can be even more difficult. But while cheaper brands will buy Grade B or C cells, the best brands (like Victron and Mastervolt) insist upon the best Grade A cells for improved long-term performance.

But what does quality really mean?

Quality in the lithium battery world means Grade-A cells from established manufacturers with precise and consistent manufacturing standards that enable battery packs to meet or exceed specifications regarding energy density and internal resistance. Cells should be as similar as possible across a batch, which is critical for balanced, efficient and long-lasting performance, because it enables easier cell balancing with less heat generation, enabling them to live up to manufacturer claims regarding charge and discharge cycles.

Quality cells will also lose very little capacity while sitting idle; and as regards safety, they will have been tested for stability at higher temperatures without swelling, leaking or risk of fire, achieving UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listing standards for finished products and UL recognition for components. Critically though, however high-quality and well-matched the cells might be, a lithium battery is only as good as the components that protect and charge it. That’s why Mastervolt makes its own BMS units, while also operating a facility in China to directly oversee standards.

It even has a facility in Holland that enables it to test each cell and match them for capacity and voltage so that the cells in any given Mastervolt battery are all but identical.

Installation by a specialist, specifically approved by the equipment provider, is vital

Are there any guarantees?

Given that nearly all lithium cell production (and most associated componentry) takes place in the Far East, production and safety standards are tough to verify. Even a highly reputed supplier’s claim of 5,000 cycles will not have been formally confirmed because it would take too long to achieve that. As things stand, 2,500 to 4,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge (DoD) remains pretty commonplace but quoted warranties should be treated with lots of caution, particularly as they are likely to involve stipulations about how the battery has been charged and discharged.

The government is looking into safety in use, safety in transport and credibility of performance claims, covering related issues like capacity, labelling and chemistry. But in spite of the industry’s exponential growth in the last decade, there are still no internationally ratified standards for battery production, so it’s vital to source your equipment from a recognised, established and reputable brand.

Do you really need lithium batteries?

No, not necessarily. If you tend to have access to shore power and you’re happy to use a generator at anchor, a good bank of AGM batteries remains an excellent solution. They are maintenance-free, spill-proof and significantly cheaper than a lithium battery bank but they still shouldn’t be discharged below 50%.

On the other hand, there’s a definite place for lithium on yachts that cruise extensively and don’t tie up in marinas every night, because you can save a bit of weight and discharge them to a greater degree, substantially increasing your off-grid autonomy.

It’s quite natural then that, just as we now see lithium battery banks providing the propulsive energy for both standalone and hybrid boats, we also now see high-capacity integrated systems that charge rapidly from the main engines (like the Fathom e-Power system) being used as very quiet, sustainable and user-friendly replacements for traditional diesel generators. And if that means you can run your engines for one hour instead of your generator for eight, that makes all kinds of sense from a cost, as well as a comfort, perspective.

How safe is lithium iron phosphate?

Done properly, it’s extremely safe. It’s used for industrial applications like forklift trucks, where it does heavyweight work all day, every day. It’s used in domestic energy storage, where the engineering has to be bulletproof both for safety and longevity. And many of the companies that service these industries also service the marine industry. But there certainly remains a risk…

If the SEI layer is damaged, the cell’s natural chemical reactions can take over, causing an uncontrolled exothermic (energy-releasing) reaction called thermal runaway. This quickly becomes self-reinforcing because the heat produced increases the pace of the chemical reaction itself, until all of a cell’s energy has been released. It can be triggered by physical impacts, cell manufacturing defects, ageing, overcharging at low temperatures, over-discharge or overheating – and it can result in smoke, toxic gases, fire and explosion.

If one cell fails, its heat can also trigger surrounding cells so, in addition to proper management and protection, mitigation measures are also vital.

How can you mitigate the risks?

You could, in principle, import a BMS and a set of batteries from China and fit them yourself. A lot of people are also tempted to simply swap lead acid for lithium. But if you want a safe and effective system that doesn’t invalidate your insurance policy, having it fitted by a qualified professional, specifically certified by the manufacturer of your equipment, is a must.

A high-quality marine-specific BMS is, of course, key. It should be able to handle cell balancing, over/under-voltage protection and temperature monitoring, ideally with independent cell-level (rather than pack-level) monitoring – and it should be properly set up for your specific boat and systems.

Location and ventilation, as well as impact mitigation and overcurrent protection, with correctly rated fuses and breakers, are also vital. Short runs of properly supported marine-grade cabling with proper connections will help minimise chafe and vibration. Modern fire-proof materials in the casings and, potentially, additional fire-suppression safety measures, can also be fitted.

And a relay per battery that enables the system to isolate a problematic unit without disabling the cluster is a very worthwhile solution.

A low-temperature safeguard is also necessary because, if the temperature drops below zero, you can easily damage the cells by charging them at too high a rate. A self-heating plate is now a common solution. It simply sits at the bottom of the battery like an electric blanket. When the temperature drops to zero, the BMS sends the charging current through the heating blanket and when it reaches 5 degrees, it channels the charge back through the cells. In all cases, though, automation (and effective networking) is critical because it avoids the need for potentially slow and fallible human intervention if things do go wrong.

How green are they?

They’re by no means as green as people tend to think. On the one hand, they appear to help decarbonise transport; they provide storage for solar and wind energy to reduce the grid’s dependence on fossil fuels; and they are much more energy-efficient and longer lasting than traditional lead-acid batteries. On the other hand, they depend on energy-intensive, water-hungry and physically destructive mining practices.

They are also extremely carbon-intensive to make – far more so in fact than internal combustion engines. And while they are almost entirely recyclable in principle, the global recycling rate is still estimated at less than 5%. Many lithium batteries end up creating toxicity issues in landfill sites and there is still no credible end-of-life recycling protocol to help guide and refine those practices.

The simple reality is that it costs far more to recycle lithium than it does to mine it afresh, so until that changes, these end-of-life issues are going to get worse. And if lawmakers do finally step in to make manufacturers responsible for recycling and disposal at end of life, prices will increase to potentially prohibitive levels.

Are solid-state batteries worthwhile?

They look very promising. By replacing a lithium battery’s liquid electrolyte with a solid (ceramic or polymer) material and using a pure lithium anode, they increase the energy density, further reducing the size and weight of your battery bank. The fact that the internal resistance is two to three times lower means they also generate far less heat during use, which removes the need for cooling systems and reduces cell degradation, theoretically extending the life of the battery. They also offer much faster charging (up to four times faster), while also improving safety by eliminating flammable materials and reducing short-circuit risks.

But while functioning models do exist, this technology is still in its infancy so it will take a few years for testing and cost-effective production to make them truly viable. In the interim, semi-solid lithium batteries may have lower energy density (only a little higher than traditional lithium batteries) but they offer many of the same advantages as solid-state technology and are already available at realistic prices.

What about sodium-ion?

Sodium-ion batteries also look promising. Once again, they use a cathode, an anode and an electrolyte to move ions but their use of relatively cheap and abundant raw materials like sodium, iron and manganese makes them much more sustainable and cost-effective than lithium. They also offer much improved cold-weather performance (down to -40°C), as well as faster charging and improved safety. But lower energy density means they are likely to remain best suited to grid storage and smaller, more affordable EVs.

The final word

Lithium batteries are by no means the perfect solution. They require careful management, their environmental credentials are questionable and, given the scale and ongoing growth of the modern industry, they remain oddly under-regulated. In a sector defined by rapid and continuous innovation and advancement, it’s also tempting for boaters to resist taking the plunge in anticipation of tomorrow’s game-changing technology – but the reality is that, although lithium batteries are undoubtedly more a stopgap than a final solution, they remain the best option we have today.

So if your boating lifestyle makes it worthwhile, and you can afford to get the latest and best-quality branded equipment installed by a specialist, then a carefully considered lithium battery purchase can have a genuinely transformative impact on the way you enjoy your boat.

He’d been invited for a couple of days’ cruising around the Greek islands on board an Azimut flybridge he’d sold to a customer. They were making their way back to Athens when the owner asked the captain to help the hostess prepare lunch. Lawrence, meanwhile, was sunbathing on the flybridge.

“I was lying on my back looking up at the sky thinking life can’t get any better, when the boat suddenly shuddered to a halt.”

Thankfully, nobody was hurt and the boat was towed back to port, but embarrassment soon turned to frustration when they realised how easily it could have been avoided.

“The information was all there but none of the systems alerted us to the danger,” says Lawrence. “Modern cars and planes have multiple warning systems to prevent accidents, so we started to investigate whether we could develop something similar for boats”.

The solution they hit upon is as elegant as it is practical. Called the WATCHIT Smart Prevention System, it uses an NMEA-compatible blackbox to take data from existing navigation aids, such as the GPS, depth sounder, AIS receiver, electronic compass and autopilot, as well as its own built-in charting software, to identify potential hazards, determine whether they pose a risk using AI-enhanced algorithms, and alert the user in time to take evasive action.

Dynamic alerts

This latter point is key, as unlike many boat warning systems, which trigger alerts based on distance, WATCHIT uses a ‘Dynamic Alert Zone’ that automatically adjusts the danger area based on speed, course and operator awareness. After all, at 200m, a static object, such as an island, presents little immediate risk to a sailing boat pottering along at 5 knots, but a jetski at the same distance travelling at 40 knots towards a sportscruiser running at 30 knots in the opposite direction is only seconds away from disaster. WATCHIT’s goal is to give at least 10 to 30 seconds’ notice of impending danger.

The other key point is that it’s an ‘always on’ system that constantly monitors all the variables but only intervenes when imminent danger looms. This could be an above-water hazard such as a ship or exposed rocks, or an underwater one like a reef or shallows that is invisible to the naked eye. Crucially, it will only flag this if it’s on a collision path. If it’s off to one side or the boat is moving away from the danger zone, it won’t sound an alert. It’s even smart enough to recognise when you’re coming into a port or marina so it doesn’t bombard you with unnecessary warnings about nearby boats.

When it does sense a serious risk, it flags this through both visual pop-ups on the boat’s existing MFD and audible warnings via its own Bluetooth speaker system. This starts with a simple beep and a calm voice describing the nature of the threat, such as “Watch it, underwater obstacle ahead” then increases in intensity until action is taken. The idea is to avoid the constant stream of minor alerts that often end up being ignored and only serve warnings when they are really needed.

WATCHIT eye

This was, and still is, the basis of WATCHIT’s core early warning system (known internally as Sense), but a recent add-on has made it even more effective. Called WATCHIT Eye, it’s a high-frequency, short-range radar that can pick up objects as small as a human head bobbing among the waves. Light enough to mount on the A-frame of a RIB or the bow of a larger yacht, it can pick out both static and moving obstacles, as well as their speed, bearing and course. And unlike other camera-based systems, it can do this in rain, fog or light.

The reason this is such a game-changer is that the core system isn’t yet compatible with radar or night vision cameras, so smaller craft and uncharted objects won’t be picked up unless they are fitted with AIS transponders. It is something the company is hoping to add in the future, but even then it wouldn’t have the speed or sensitivity of the WATCHIT Eye.

Interestingly, it was developed in conjunction with the Azimut Benetti Group, which liked the idea of the WATCHIT system but felt it was lacking this functionality. It can now pick up anything from navigation marks to kayaks, jetskis and paddleboards, as well as larger boats and RIBs. If the operator fails to heed the warning and take evasive action, it could even be programmed to slow or stop the engines, but for the moment at least, boat builders have shied away from enabling this.

MBY Verdict

Although the core WATCHIT system is both retrofittable and compatible with all the major brands such as Raymarine, Garmin and Navico, Azimut’s role in developing the WATCHIT Eye means it has a one-year exclusivity deal on fitting this new feature to its superyachts.

Pricing for the core system starts at around €4,800, with the Eye module likely to add another €6,000 once it becomes more widely available. There’s also an annual subscription of €350 to ensure the charts and software are constantly kept updated. Given the potential WATCHIT Eye has for eliminating many of the most common boating accidents, over 80 per cent of which are caused by human error, that seems like a tempting proposition, especially on a bigger boat where the human and/or financial costs of an accident could prove crippling.

The problem with electric planing boats is not lack of speed or acceleration but the size of the battery; too small and the range becomes vanishingly small, too big and the weight prevents the boat from planing. But what if you could recharge the battery from an equally quiet, clean and emissions-free source?

That’s the premise behind Italian yard Tykun’s hydrogen-powered H1 chase boat. By fitting it with a fuel cell that converts hydrogen gas into electricity, it gives all the benefits of an electric craft without the usual limitations. Tykun claims a top speed of over 35 knots and a range of 60nm at a cruising speed of 20 knots.

“It’s like having an electric boat with the charger always plugged in,” says Vittorio Maccone, Sales Engineer at TESYA Group, which is responsible for the H1’s drivetrain.

Fast and Functional

The idea for the project was sparked by a challenge to produce a hydrogen-powered superyacht tender that was “usable and manageable for a customer”, according to Ugo Casadio, Chief Technical Officer at Tykun’s parent company, MED Group.

Until now the only similar-sized hydrogen- powered vessels have been the high-tech chase boats designed and built specifically for the America’s Cup. Impressive as these carbon fibre foiling powercats are, with their 50-knot top speeds and cruising ranges of over 100nm, they are far too complex, expensive and impractical for use as a superyacht tender let alone a mainstream leisure boat.

The H1, by contrast, is based on a robust 40ft monohull design with proven military roots. Being built from aluminium, it’s still usefully lighter than standard GRP (the hull weighs around 3 tonnes) but far less brittle and expensive to build than carbon fibre. And unlike the semi-enclosed power cats that rely on complex algorithms and multiple sensors to keep them flying above the water on their adjustable foiling systems, the H1 is no harder to drive than a regular planing sportscruiser.

The boat itself was designed by Tommaso Spadolini with functionality and seaworthiness as top priorities, meaning the hydrogen propulsion package had to be out of sight and out of mind. By raising the deck level 10cm higher than normal, enough space was liberated under it for four cylindrical tanks carrying 32kg of hydrogen at 350 BAR. Ventilation for the tanks was also integrated into the supports for the T-Top to minimise the aesthetic impact.

The high-pressure gas is then fed to a centrally mounted fuel cell, a marinised version of the 70kW fuel cell developed by Toyota for its Mirai car and adapted for marine use by EODev. This passes the hydrogen through a catalytic membrane which splits the molecules into protons and electrons before combining them with oxygen from the air to release heat, electricity and water.

This alone wouldn’t generate enough power to accelerate the boat onto the plane or to reach its desired top speed, so rather than powering the twin 110kW electric motors directly, it feeds into a 240kWh battery bank that acts as both a buffer storage facility and a power booster. This can be charged by a DC fast charger in the marina before you set off as well as by the onboard fuel cell on the go. As with all planing boats, once it’s over the hump it doesn’t require nearly as much power to keep it running at an efficient speed.

Quick to Refuel

Neither the make of the battery nor the electric motors have yet been revealed but the renderings show two relatively tall battery banks set behind the fuel cell. The motors themselves are positioned well aft in a similar location to conventional petrol or diesel engines, but being smaller they don’t protrude nearly as far forward. These are linked directly to a pair of sterndrives with twin counter-rotating propellers. Again, the make and model of these has not yet been confirmed but Mercruiser
or Volvo Penta are the likely candidates.

As well as having a longer range than most electric boats (typically around 20nm at planing speeds), it’s also much quicker to refuel – the four hydrogen tanks can be refilled in just three minutes. Tykun has teamed up with hydrogen infrastructure specialist NatPowerH to provide support for this, and all the systems have been type approved to minimise legislative hurdles and maximise safety. The price of the H1 has yet to be confirmed but if a suitable customer or strategic partner can be found, the prototype could be on the water within 6-8 months.

Neither the deck layouts nor the aesthetics have been compromised by the transition to hydrogen

Promising as this new concept is, its environmental credentials rely on the availability of green hydrogen and/or electricity. While most countries now generate a significant amount of electricity from renewable sources such as wind turbines and solar farms, the vast majority of commercially available hydrogen is produced from either natural gas or methane, known as blue or grey hydrogen depending on whether the carbon emitted is captured or released into the atmosphere.

Only when the hydrogen is made by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using wind or solar generated electricity is it considered a truly green alternative. That said any boat which offers the advantages of electric power, such as quieter running, reduced vibrations, instant torque and zero harmful emissions at the point of use, without the usual drawbacks has to be a positive development.

And as the demand for green hydrogen grows, the production capacity and infrastructure will grow with it.

Canadian company Mustang Survival was launched in 1967 and made its name with the Float Coat – the first wet weather jacket to feature built-in closed cell foam to help keep wearers afloat if they fell overboard. Since then it has gone on to design clothing for NASA, US Navy Seals and the Canadian Coastguard as well as leisure boaters.

The Meris Waterproof Jacket is available in red or navy Blue from XS to XXL. Surprisingly, given its price and heritage, it is by far the lightest and least bulky of the jackets on test, weighing just 853g – almost 400g less than the Henri Lloyd Elite. This a deliberate choice to make it as comfortable and flexible as possible, without compromising its performance or durability.

It is made from a top-spec 3-layer Marine Spec BP waterproof, breathable fabric with fully taped seams and an Aquaseal main zip. This negates the need for any storm flaps inside or out, reducing weight and bulk. It survived our pressure-washer test without any leaks.

The two waist cargo pockets are zipped and unlined, as are the two chest/lifejacket strap height handwarmers. There are no internal pockets.

We found the double adjustable cuffs with neoprene, rather than rubber, seals to be the most comfortable and easiest to adjust of all. And we particularly liked the well structured hood with clear side panels and a thin but very comfortable foldaway faceguard. However, the printed reflectors seem rather small and prone to wear compared to the plastic ones.

This was the most comfortable and flexible jacket of the group but it seemed short on features for the price and it will be interesting to see if it proves as durable over the long term.

Norwegian brand Helly Hansen has been making waterproofs since 1877 when Captain Helly Juel Hansen and his wife Maren discovered that by soaking linen in linseed oil they could make water-resistant clothing.

Its latest Aegir Race waterproof boating jacket is rather more sophisticated and spans the gap between its regular Skagen Offshore jacket (£325) and its top spec Aegir Ocean 2.0 (£1,200). It’s available in three colours (yellow, black and red) and sizes from S to 2XL. The yellow one is currently discounted to £490 online.

Made from a four-layer HELLY TECH fabric with sturdy taped seams and reinforced Cordura panels around the elbows and seat, it feels stiffer and heavier than some but also more robust. To counter this, the opening uses a heavy-duty waterproof zip with a single inner storm flap. We found the zip a little awkward to engage and stiff to pull up or down but less bulky than multiple exterior storm flaps with fiddly velcro patches.

Adjustable cuffs form a tight seal and we rated the collar and hood arrangement with its soft face guard and sturdy hood, with clear peak and sides, as the best of the bunch.

The cargo pockets aren’t as big as some but waterproof zips ensure they stay dry. We would have liked to see waist-level handwarmers behind them as the chest ones aren’t easily accessible when wearing a lifejacket. A seamless shoulder design (the place where jackets tend to leak first) helped it fly through our waterproof tests and it feels like it will continue to do so for many years to come, as you would hope given its premium pricing.

LOMO is a Scottish-based online retailer of watersports clothing and gear. By designing all its own products and selling direct to the consumer with no shops or middlemen, it is able to offer decent quality gear at a remarkably low price.

The Coriolis waterproof boating jacket only comes in this one red colour and unisex cut but sizes range from XS to 2XL. The fabric is unbranded and we couldn’t determine how many layers it features but it is waterproof to 20,000mm and features a DWR coating, so water beads off it, and it has fully taped seams.

The cut is a little shorter and snugger than some (the test sample is a Large, whereas the others are all Medium) so it doesn’t cover your backside when seated. However, the elbows are reinforced and the sleeves feature the usual inner and outer adjustable cuffs.

The main zip isn’t waterproof and only comes up to neck height but velcro tabs on the fleece-lined collar ensure a snug fit round your neck while double storm flaps with a folded seam funnel water away from your chest. Deep cargo pockets with microfleece handwarmers behind are complemented by a pair of water resistant outer chest pockets and a secure inner one.

The hood isn’t the best – even after adjustment it felt a bit loose and floppy – but big reflector panels and neon yellow details and zip pulls makes it easy to spot in low light.

I’ve personally been wearing one for the last year, and other than a few loose threads around the velcro tabs and a tendency for the bright red colour to show the dirt, it has held up remarkably well. It is still 100% waterproof and while it’s not my favourite in terms of looks, fit, or detailing, I can’t knock its value for money.

Founded in 1975 by keen sailor Nick Gill in a corner of his father’s textile factory, this British brand has built a reputation for good quality but relatively affordable marine clothing, including waterproof boating jackets.

The latest iteration of its popular OS2 Offshore jacket is the culmination of those 50 years of experience combined with the feedback from over 250 existing OS2 wearers. Available in three colours and sizes from XS to 3XL, including M-Tall and XL-Tall, it features Gill’s own XPLORE technology.

This consists of a two-layer outer fabric tested to 30,000mm with taped seams and a separate inner lining (the others form part of the outer fabric). It has also passed Gill’s infamous abrasion test, being rubbed by grit paper for at least 3 hours, to guarantee its durability.

The result is a good-looking mid-weight jacket that feels a little bulkier than some due to that loose lining. We found the chunky main zip quick to engage with a large toggle that could easily be gripped by gloved hands.

While the zip isn’t waterproof, the double-layer velcroed stormflap prevents water penetrating it.

We particularly liked the big cargo pockets with cosy fleece-lined handwarmers behind and the two external zipped waterproof chest pockets for storing phones, glasses etc.

The collar is also fleece-lined with an extra face guard that tucks away when not in use and a snug-fitting hood with enough structure to prevent it collapsing in heavy rain.

It passed all our waterproof tests but the clear tape used to seal the seams looks rather lightweight and there aren’t any reinforcement panels on the seat or elbows but overall it’s a solid performer at a sensible price.

Founded by British Olympic sailor Keith Musto in 1980, the company has grown to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of sailing, equestrian and fieldsports clothing.

The BR3 Pertex Offshore jacket sits just below its top of the range MPX and HPX jackets, both of which feature Gore-Tex and punchier pricing. It comes in Red, Blue or Charcoal and sizes from S-XXL for men or 8-18 for women.

The three-layer Pertex Shield fabric is waterproof to 20,000mm and all seams have been taped.

Despite this, it is the second lightest waterproof jacket in our test with good mobility, breathability and a nice soft feel that doesn’t crinkle as much as the stiffer fabrics when flexed. Long sleeves with inner and outer adjustable cuffs allow for easy movement but lack elbow reinforcement.

The main two-way plastic zip isn’t waterproof but is protected by double outer storm flaps with a turned and sewn water channel. Its neon orange colour and corded toggle make it easy to see and engage, even in low light.

The zip stops short of the collar with a fleece-lined velcro flap providing some adjustment. However, this wasn’t enough to stop water running down my neck during the spray test, and while the hood stayed dry, it looks ill-fitting when tightened.

We like the big, deep cargo pockets and the micro-fleece lined handwarmer pockets behind them, which sit below the level of most lifejacket straps. There’s a secure (but not watertight) zipped chest pocket under the storm flap, and an internal one with a corded spectacle cleaner.

While not the highest spec jacket, we rated it highly for fit, comfort and style, striking a good balance between mobility and performance.

Founded in 1963 by Henri Strzelecki OBE with the stated mission of creating the world’s best waterproof clothing, British brand Henri Lloyd has stayed true to its aim ever since. By using man-made fabrics and sealing over the seams with hand-glued tape, it helped set the template for almost all modern sailing jackets.

The latest Elite Offshore waterproof jacket is available in sizes from S to 3XL. We opted for the medium and found it to be unusually generous with plenty of room for insulating layers and a longer cut than most, especially at the back where a reinforced Cordura seat panel extends well below bum level.

Its 3-layer DRI PRO fabric does feel quite robust, which combined with its generous cut, meant it was the heaviest of the group and the bulkiest to pack. On the flip side, we rated it as very well made while elasticated toggles at the hem and waist allow you to pinch it in to fit your body shape.

The chunky plastic zip slotted home easily and was protected by double outer storm flaps with full-length velcro fastenings. Adjustable inner and outer cuffs felt equally snug and secure. The collar, however, was both a touch stiffer and looser than we’d have liked, even with the faceguard on its tightest setting.

The hood, on the other hand, was one of the best on test with two-way adjustment and clear plastic panels giving good protection against wind and spray.

We were impressed by the deep cargo pockets and handwarmers at both waist and chest height. It also has a waterproof outer pocket on the left arm and a secure zipped inner one.

Not a drop penetrated our waterproof tests and all our reviewers rated the cut, colour, and detailing – particularly the Union Jack reflectors.

We found the chunky main zip quick to engage, and the fleece-lined handwarmer pockets are perfectly positioned.

Henri Lloyd Elite Offshore Jacket – The Heavy-Duty Choice

If you’re heading into serious weather, the Henri Lloyd Elite is a formidable piece of kit. It’s the heaviest jacket in the group, but that weight translates to a feeling of total invincibility. What to look for in a waterproof boating jacket

When you aren’t being hosed down in a garden, these are the specs that actually matter:

Hydrostatic Head (Waterproof Rating): Measured in mm. 10,000mm is coastal; 20,000mm+ is offshore territory. Our test winner (Gill) boasts a massive 30,000mm.

Layers: 2-layer jackets usually have a separate mesh or fleece lining for comfort. 3 and 4-layer jackets bond everything together for a tougher, more “technical” feel.

The seam test: A jacket is only as dry as its tape. Look for wide, heat-sealed tape on every internal seam.

Breathability: Crucial if you’re actually working the winches. Look for high MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate) scores to avoid the “plastic bag” effect.

The idea of a joystick control is nothing new, everyone from Volvo Penta to Mercury has been doing it for years, but Yamaha has taken it one step further; its latest Helm Master EX system is available with a wireless remote controller. Yes, you read that right the first time, you can now drive the boat from anywhere on board using something that looks like a handheld gaming device.

Need to keep an eye on the stern while backing into a tight berth? No problem, take the remote control with you to the cockpit, ease the tiny joystick back with your thumb, keep the bow in check with a quick push or pull of your forefinger on the front-mounted slider and before you know it you’re safely in your berth.

How about looking for an area of clear sand before dropping the anchor? Equally simple – just position yourself on the anchor platform, controller in hand, and nudge the boat forwards, backwards or sideways until you find the perfect spot.

Advanced functions

In fact, anything you can do with the normal Helm Master joystick is now replicated in full on the remote control, including turning on the spot, manoeuvring sideways and a host of other dedicated functions. Just let it know the direction you want to go in and the computer will sort out the steering and throttles for you.

It’s not just a berthing aid either; there are several other pre-programmed functions. Staypoint is arguably the most valuable of these, as it acts like a virtual anchor, using a precise GPS fix to hold you in place regardless of wind or tide while you sort out lines and fenders or wait for a lock to open.

This can be a little unnerving at first as the engines automatically click into gear or start steering themselves in opposite directions, but once you learn to trust it, it should maintain its position within a 5m radius.

Fishpoint does a similar job but with a slightly larger radius and slower, gentler reactions so as not to spook fish when holding station over a wreck, for instance. Driftpoint is yet another angling-focused variation that keeps the bow and stern pointing where you want but allows the boat to drift with the wind and tide – handy when you’ve got multiple lines out that risk getting tangled if the bow gets blown around.

The final one is called Patternsteer and lets you select from preset patterns, which the boat can follow, such as circling around a wreck or performing a j-turn to search for an MOB.

Child’s play

Sensibly, the controller is also fitted with a small colour screen showing key information such as speed, depth and heading. This is particularly handy when using it in conjunction with the autopilot system, so you can instantly adjust the heading by five or 10° without having to be within reach of the helm.

It’s compatible with the latest generation of Yamaha outboards from 150hp upwards (the smaller ones lack the fly-by-wire steering needed) and although it will work with a single engine, to get the best from it you really need at least a twin rig and ideally an integrated bow thruster from Vetus, Sleipner or Lewmar. Once it’s been set up to suit your boat, using it is child’s play. In fact, given how similar it is to a computer games controller, you’ll probably find a teenager gets the hang of it quicker than you.

We tested the system on a Jeanneau Cap Camarat 9 with twin Yamaha F250 outboards at the Southampton Boat Show and mostly found it very intuitive. The freedom of being able to move around the cockpit and check how close you are to the pontoon or adjust a fender while still having full control of the throttles and steering, is truly liberating.

MOB fobs act like wireless kill cords, stopping the propeller if anyone falls overboard

The only thing to remember is that while the controls are set to replicate a fixed joystick facing towards the bow (when you would always be pushing the joystick in the direction you want to move), you might now be holding it while facing astern, in which case you’d need to push it in the opposite direction. You soon get the hang of it but if in doubt the easiest thing to do is keep the hand with the controller pointing towards the bow at all times.

Safety first

Any concerns you might have about dropping the controller, or worse still, falling overboard with it, have also been accounted for.

The controller itself is water resistant and designed to float. It also comes with a clever integrated MOB system comprising two slightly different fobs you can clip to clothing or strap round a wrist like a watch.

They both work in the same way – cutting power to the engines as soon as the short-range wireless connection to the helm is lost by falling overboard – but whereas the Captain’s fob cuts the engines completely, the Passenger fob puts the engines into neutral until the Captain decides what action is needed to retrieve the MOB. The system can handle up to eight fobs at once, so you can buy extra ones for additional crew members, or even your dog.

Controlling steering from the stern enables pinpoint berthing

The fobs don’t need their own power source, but the handheld controller does need to be charged from time to time. The built-in battery should last for at least a day on the water, and can either be stored in a charging dock at the helm or plugged into any USB-C port.

Verdict

The Helm Master EX system is a clever and well thought out addition to the usual joystick solution. It combines unprecedented freedom of movement with all the usual benefits of simplified berthing and virtual anchoring, plus the added safety of an integrated MOB system.

Whether it’s worth the extra cost will depend on the individual user. For many people, the fixed joystick will cover most of their needs, but for watersports enthusiasts and anglers who regularly need to move around the boat while still having full control of the helm, it could be a real boon.

A boat that berths itself has long been the dream of everyone from nervous owners to enthusiastic sales people, but despite repeated efforts from some of the industry’s biggest players, bringing a viable system to market has proved frustratingly elusive. Now at last, Simrad claims to have cracked it with its new AutoCaptain Autonomous Boating System.

If that sounds like a mouthful, using it is disarmingly simple. All you do is switch on the dedicated app on your Simrad MFD, select which berth you’d like to dock in, press the Autodocking button and sit back while it manoeuvres you gently into place. If that’s not enough, it can also leave a berth (Undocking) and manoeuvre you out of a tight spot such as a lock entrance or fuel berth queue (Move to Position). And like the Martini ads of old, it can be used ‘any time, any place, anywhere’.

The key to this versatility is that instead of relying on fixed radar beacons or existing charts, it uses six separate cameras and a pair of GPS receivers to build its own digital map of the area. Each of these cameras consists of two identical lenses set 27cm apart with a 100-degree field of vision.

Once you’ve selected an empty berth and initiated the auto-docking process, the software starts
manoeuvring the boat towards the dock using the same control systems as the joystick

Much like a pair of human eyes, each of these lenses sends a real time view to a computer that compares the pixels on both images to calculate the distance of everything it can ‘see’. By combining the information from all six cameras, the software builds up a 360-degree digital 3D map of the area.

To make it easier for the user to visualise, this is displayed on screen as both a live video feed and a 2D bird’s-eye view with the boat at the centre and colour-coded features representing water, other boats, land and potential docking spaces.

Once you’ve decided which berth to dock in, you simply drag and drop your boat into the allocated space, taking care to position it bow or stern-in and port or starboard side-to as normal. Provided the computer senses the chosen slip is big enough (it needs about 4ft on either side), it then plots a path and waits for you to press the Start Autodocking button.

When the boat is close enough to the chosen berth, the docking process gently eases it into the
space. As with manual joystick control, it can move sideways as well as forwards, backwards and rotating

When you do, the computer takes control of the boat’s throttles, steering and bow thruster (where fitted) to manoeuvre the boat slowly and safely into place, regardless of wind or tide. Once it has touched, it will even hold the boat alongside while you secure the lines.

If, during the docking process, the system senses anything unexpected in its path such as a passing kayak or tender, it will either pause or reroute itself. You also have the option to pause or disengage it manually, either by pressing one of the on-screen buttons or by overriding it with the boat’s throttles or joystick.

While it is claimed to work in almost any environment, including low-light conditions, and normal wind and tides (within the joystick’s usual manoeuvring abilities), it is not without its limitations. For starters, the cameras have to have a clear view of the berth – you can’t simply select an empty pontoon on the MFD’s chart and tell it to go there.

It might also struggle in fog, darkness or very strong winds and tides. And of course the cameras can’t see what’s happening underwater so won’t be able to judge whether there’s enough depth when coming alongside a tidal quay or slip. Ultimately, the skipper or captain of the boat still has to keep a careful watch over proceedings and be prepared to take back control if needed.

Rather more frustrating for existing boat owners is that AutoCaptain is currently only available on new-build boats fitted with Mercury engines and joystick control rather than as a retrofit.

Being part of the giant Brunswick Group, along with Mercury Marine and Boston Whaler, Simrad has developed all the software to work with the Mercury operating system, while the system itself is built into the vessel, ‘preserving its aesthetics while providing unparalleled precision, ease of use, and situational awareness.’

That also explains why the first boat to offer it as a factory-fit option is the new Boston Whaler 405 Conquest, although it will soon be introduced to other Brunswick Group brands. At the time of going to press the pricing hadn’t been announced but expect something in the region of $30-50,000.

Verdict

While we’ve yet to see AutoCaptain in action, it does appear to be a more complete, versatile system than anything we’ve seen from Volvo, Garmin or Raymarine.

We’d be interested to see how it copes in a busy Mediterranean port, where stern-to berthing spaces are rarely more than a couple of feet wider than the boat, and it needs to be made available to a wider range of boats for it to really catch on, but if it lives up to its promise, this could be a game-changer.

What’s your worst fear as a boater? Colliding with another boat? Hitting a semi-submerged log? Failing to spot an open-water swimmer? Getting entangled in a lobster pot? All of them could be catastrophic, yet it’s easy to imagine it happening.

However attentive we are, it only takes a momentary distraction or visibility compromised by low light, glare or rolling seas and before you know it, the unthinkable has happened. The solution, according to SEA.AI is a virtual watchkeeper that never sleeps, can’t be distracted and uses artificial intelligence to recognise and alert you to any potential collision threats.

It works by using a combination of super sensitive low light and thermal vision cameras to spot things in your path which even radar and AIS might miss. It then compares any floating object it detects to its database of over 18 million images of previously identified items and alerts the skipper with visual and audio alerts showing what the danger is and how urgent a threat it poses.

Robot Vision

While this technology has been around for a while (we wrote about its predecessor the OSCAR Sentry in 2021), the cost and size of the hardware involved limited its appeal to superyachts and serious blue-water cruisers.

Now, improvements in packaging and falling tech prices have brought it within reach of many more boaters. Its latest product, the entry-level SEA.AI Watchkeeper, starts at €4,490 ex VAT and can easily be fitted to boats as small as 30ft.

Launched at the Cannes boat show last month, the photos show it mounted on the hard top of a Nimbus T9 sportsboat, looking no more out of place than a GPS receiver or VHF antenna. Weighing just 935g and measuring 110 x 163 x 86mm, it simply bolts onto a radar mast or any other high point with a clear view forward.

OSCAR first look: The revolutionary system bringing AI to yacht navigation

Even this entry-level model is claimed to see further, in a wider variety of conditions and with much greater accuracy, than the human eye. With a view that extends from immediately in front of the boat all the way to the horizon and a 135-degree field of vision, it can pick up objects as small as a pot marker or human head.

It can even spot the spout of a passing whale or semi-submerged piece of driftwood. That said, the actual precision and low-light ability of the system is dependent on the specification of the Watchkeeper’s built-in cameras.

The basic Watchkeeper Lite model comes with a 3840 x 2160 pixel colour camera that can pick up a large ship on the horizon, a motor or sailing boat at 900m, a jetski or RIB at 350m and a pot marker or human head up to 65m away.

The Watchkeeper 320 adds a basic thermal imaging camera to the package, extending its ability to spot dangers at night but also increasing those last three range figures to 1,300m, 500m and 110m respectively, albeit at the higher price of €8,290 ex VAT. The top of the range Watchkeeper 1280, meanwhile, pushes the range out even further to 2,500m, 960m and 220m respectively.

Lobster Pots ahead

Whichever cameras it has fitted, the software continuously scans every pixel on the live video stream, using its algorithms to search for anomalies among the waves. As soon as a floating object is detected, it locks onto it, classifies it as one of nine categories (ship, motor boat, yacht, dinghy, buoy, container, whale, person or unidentified hazard) and triggers an audible and visual alert, identifying the object along with its distance and bearing.

This can either be overlaid onto the camera’s video feed with an identifying icon, range and a traffic light system of colours to show how immediate the threat is or, if the MFD screen is being used in chart or radar mode, it will simply announce the threat as ‘danger ahead’ (or to port or starboard) with increasing volume and frequency if no action is taken to avoid it.

The system is compatible with all the main manufacturers of modern MFDs and is designed to work offline, only needing a Wi-Fi connection for software updates and ever more advanced data sets of recognised objects. It can also be streamed to a tablet or smartphone so you can keep an eye on things if you nip below deck to make a cuppa.

An optional thermal camera adds night vision to its regular low light cameras

A black box solution, called SEA.AI Brain, offers all the same features but uses existing third-party thermal imaging cameras that boat owners have already fitted to their craft. It’s important to note, however, that none of these products is being promoted as an alternative to radar or AIS systems but as an adjunct to them.

For instance, it is not designed to identify land or rocks, nor can it pick up sudden rain squalls or weather fronts. And unlike some other anti-collision technologies, such as the WATCHIT system also unveiled at Cannes, it won’t sync with your boat’s depth transducer to warn you of impending underwater dangers.

Its compact size and weight make it suitable for smaller boats too

Verdict

While no single piece of technology can replace the eyes, ears and brains of a human boat skipper, SEA.AI’s new Watchkeeper sounds like a formidable extra weapon to have at your disposal.

Its ability to keep an unwavering lookout 24 hours a day regardless of visibility, and its immunity to human frailties such as tiredness, distractions or regular calls of nature, gives it an advantage that no individual can match. Until we have tried and tested the system for ourselves, we can’t fully verify how reliable and accurate it is but the fact that this technology is now available to a much wider section of boaters at a more affordable price can only be a good thing.

It might even help you spot a whale or a passing pod of dolphins.

When Steve Jordan decided to fit a bow thruster to his 28ft sportsboat, he couldn’t get over the cost of it. The cheapest quote for installing one came to £4,750 plus VAT. Faced with this, most of us would have either stumped up the cash through gritted teeth or carried on without one.

Being the director of an engineering company, Steve wasn’t so easily defeated. After all, how hard could it be to push the bow of a boat sideways? The more he thought about it, the more flaws he saw in traditional bow thruster designs. As well as being costly to buy and time consuming to install, they are often noisy, prone to overheating and vulnerable to fouling and corrosion. Moreover, if anything goes wrong, it usually involves lifting the boat to fix it.

The Marine Sidejet uses a compact electric waterjet mounted above water level

Easy installation

The solution that he and his colleague Alan Meeks from GTD-Group came up with is as simple as it is elegant. Called the Marine Sidejet, it is uses a compact two-way waterjet mounted in a sealed unit above the waterline. This is connected to a pair of flexible pressure hoses attached to skin fittings on either side of the bow.

Run the jet one way and it sucks water in from one side and ejects it out the other, pushing the bow in the opposite direction. Run the jet the other way and everything reverses, pushing the bow in the other direction.

This has a number of tangible benefits. First, it makes the installation process quicker and easier.

Fitting a conventional bow thruster involves drilling a large, perfectly straight hole through both sides of the bow and glassing in a tunnel between them.

It’s a major job with structural implications that is well beyond the reach of most DIY boat owners. Fitting a Marine Sidejet is a much simpler proposition because the holes are smaller (2-2.5in), linked by flexible hoses and made watertight simply by tightening the two halves of the skin fittings supplied.

The Sidejet itself is a compact plug and play unit weighing around 4kg that can be mounted anywhere nearby regardless of orientation, provided it’s above the waterline.

Corrosion resistant

The main benefit of this is that if anything does go wrong, such as a blockage or broken turbine blade, it can be cleared or replaced without needing to lift the boat out of the water.

If the problem can’t be sorted in situ, Sidejet even plan to offer a temporary replacement unit so the customer can carry on boating while the original is taken away to be fixed. The other advantage of mounting it above the waterline is that the water drains out when not in use, helping to prevent corrosion and fouling.

This happens naturally every time the boat rises up onto the plane but can also be done on the berth by opening a valve. On the production version there will also be a Hozelock adapter so owners can flush it through with fresh water.

A small vacuum pump automatically kicks in when the unit is switched on again to prime the waterjet. Driving the turbine blades is a small but highly efficient 48/60V digital motor running at up to 15,000rpm for a continuous output of 6.5kW (approx 8hp).

Similar to the waterjets found in electric boats, this is linked to a torpedo-shaped composite waterjet housing by a stainless steel shaft running through ceramic bearings and seals. The size and shape of the turbine blades are designed to prevent cavitation, delivering around 11.5kgf of thrust without the familiar racket of a traditional bow thruster.

By angling the skin fittings 10 degrees down, the jetstream is also directed under water, significantly reducing surface disturbance. To further simplify installation, each unit will be supplied with two handheld remote controls and a bracket so one of them can be used as a fixed controller.

The batteries in these will need replacing every few years.

Test run

We were invited to sea trial the prototype on Steve’s own Formula 260 bow rider. As promised, the jet primed itself in a couple of seconds and was soon spinning away with a relatively discreet high-pitched whine.

You could just make out a thin jet of water streaming down and out from under the bow but there were no visible or audible signs of aeration or cavitation, just a steady sideways movement of the bow.

This wasn’t quite as fast or powerful as we had hoped, perhaps because we had drained quite a bit of power from the five relatively small 12V lead acid batteries during the photo shoot but also because the prototype’s skin fittings are angled too far down due to the deep vee of the Formula’s hull. By the time production versions are available in a month or two, Steve assures us this will be resolved.

He also plans to offer two different sizes of Sidejet: the 11.5kgf unit shown here for craft up to 28ft and a 25kgf unit for boats up to 35ft. These will be supplied with stainless steel skin fittings, matching seacocks and all the necessary mounts, bar the vacuum hoses and batteries, so customers can spec them according to their needs.

Initially these will be assembled in house with a target starting price of £1,799 inc VAT. If this goes well, he also has plans to develop a quad-jet system that can move the boat in any direction, much like IPS but for a fraction of the cost.

The tool feels weighty in the hand, not excessively so, but more reassuringly weighty. The tools are all robust and inspire confidence to tackle a wide array of jobs that lesser multitools would buckle in the face of.

Though these do have a premium price, they are worth it.

These Steiner Navigator Pro 7×50 binoculars have been used (maybe slightly abused) for the past six years onboard my Dehler 36.

I sail and race solo or double handed but take non-sailing friends and guests onboard throughout the year. These binoculars have been used for everything. I mean everything! They’ve been used to line up a racing mark and a bearing to a finish mark on a longer race, they’ve been used for general pilotage too.

They’ve also been used by friends who want to learn to take multipoint fixes and plot them on a chart as well as spot local wildlife at anchor and trails up coastlines for exploration later on land.

They’re without doubt some of the best binoculars for boating.

Airhead Slice

The Airhead Slice towable boat tube is an ideal choice for boaters looking to introduce younger or more cautious riders to the thrills of being towed. Its tapered design is a key feature, creating a thinner back end that makes it much easier to clamber onto from the water, which is a major win for beginners.

The focus on rider comfort is clear throughout the design, including comfortable neoprene pads and knuckle guards, ensuring a stable and secure experience. While testing the Slice, we found it to be predictable and relatively tame, which is precisely its strength for certain users.

The Airhead Slice has a low centre of gravity and a compact, disc-like shape, make it less inclined to tip its occupants or jump wildly over waves. For more experienced, perhaps lankier, adult riders, this might feel a little dull—and we did notice some discomfort with shins hanging off the back—but this is mitigated for smaller children and nervous riders.

The limited space, which was an issue for adults, won’t be a problem for smaller frames. It’s easy to slide outside the wake at speed, but fundamentally, the Slice delivers a wonderfully stable ride that won’t discourage young kids or first-timers, making it a perfect, beginner-friendly addition to any family’s watersports gear.

Sevylor Madison 2 Person Inflatable Kayak

This two person kayak has two side chambers that inflate inside a hard wearing nylon outer that allows them to be pressured up. The floor is inflated too and this gives the kayak a certain degree of rigidity. The two seats are inflatable and are quite comfy, you can adjust the pressure to suit your own backside’s preference.

The front and back ends of the kayak have small spray-decks to help keep water spray out of the kayak. They’re velcroed in place so are easy to peel back to access the valves sheltered underneath.

Bluefin 10ft 8in Cruise paddle board

I can’t be alone in being deeply suspicious about any number of the cheap paddle board options on Amazon and so, when I first came across a Bluefin paddle board kit a couple of years back, heavily discounted in an Amazon sale, I was very dubious of the quality that might be on offer.

However, I’ve now been testing the Bluefin 10ft 8in Cruise paddle board kit for a couple of months and can report that it is far, far better than I had assumed.

Is it the best inflatable paddle board on the market? No. Is it surprisingly good for the cost? Absolutely.

Give the gift of peace of mind on the water with this compact satellite communicator that sends and receives messages, tracks and logs location points, and uses simple navigation globally.

I love the simplicity of the small tracker and the ability to text. It’s such a simple thing, but does feel like I’m still in touch with family with my daily text.

The battery life has been excellent. With hourly track points set, it used 75% charge in 10 days. It uses USB C to charge which is easy and low power for even the most frugal boating battery bank.

I highly recommend the Garmin Inreach Mini2. Cheap to use and invaluable for keeping in touch and letting friends and family, or a wider network know how you’re doing on whatever big adventure you’re on. Hiking the Alps, sailing an ocean, going off piste in the wilderness. This thing means you are never more than a click away from people knowing your location.

There’s a lot to like about this bag and it’s easy to understand why Red’s founder tells me they have become extremely popular.

It’s stylish and light weight, with smooth zips designed not to snag, and the best part is that it’s made out of recycled plastic bottles (TPU). And the zips and seals really work too – this was one of only two bags not to let a drop of water in during our submersion test.

The duffel style design can be carried conventionally over the shoulder or has detachable shoulder straps for use as a backpack.

Lotus Grill Portable BBQ

These clever little portable BBQs are perfect for boat owners. They’re surprisingly compact, reach cooking temperature in four minutes, create very little smoke and don’t get hot on the outside.

I was pretty dubious about that last claim – dubious enough to not risk trying it on anything important, opting to test it out on an old piece of scrap wood. Much to my surprise I was able to cook our test sausages and chicken pieces without heating the wood much at all.

Standard Horizon HX890

The Standard Horizon HX890 handheld VHF is a feature-rich, top spec handheld marine radio, with impressive functionality. It features a large screen, which is easy to read but also points to the array of functions available.

The handheld radio floats with a highly visible strobe light activated when in the water and is fully waterproof with an IPX8 rating, which is the highest waterproofing of any of the VHF handheld radios I tested.

I got 27 hours from this on standby monitoring VTS ch12 in a busy Southampton shipping port and the clarity of the speaker even when turned up to max, though not the loudest in our test group, was excellent.

Sony SRS-XB13 waterproof bluetooth speaker

The Sony SRS-XB13 waterproof bluetooth speaker is my favourite speaker for use out in the water and I often take mine (for which I paid full price) with me when I’m paddle boarding or out on the water sailing.

As anyone with interest in speakers will know, this is a market where you really do get what you pay for. There might well be cheaper waterproof speakers out there, but few of those will deliver the same audio quality as this excellent option from Sony.

It has to be said that this is not the biggest speaker in the world and so it’s never going to deliver the same volume as larger waterproof speaker options, however, even at full volume this produces very little distortion and for its size the bass is really very impressive indeed.

Muggi drinks carrier

Back in the days when we actually worked in an office together, our Muggi was a key member of the MBY team and now remote working is the system du jour these Muggis exist in most of our team members’ homes.

It also works rather well on boats, where its deep drinks holders and grippy feet ensure the risk of a spillage is kept to a minimum. Even better, all Muggis are now made out of 100% recycled material, including recovered marine plastic.

Wonderbag slow cooker

This simple device uses insulation rather than power to create slow-cooked stews. You just bring the pot to the boil, pop it in the bag and let it cook for up to 12 hours, saving energy and reducing emissions.

Wonderbag is such a simple and useful bit of kit for boaters – for whom limited fuel and a desire not to leave things cooking unattended are key considerations. Essentially, you get your meal piping hot, stick it in this insulated bag neatly stowed away and your meal continues to cook via the residual heat.

It’s a great piece of kit and anyone who has used a crockpot or slow cooker will already have a wealth of suitable recipes. A small note, that as this relies on residual heat to cook your food it struggles with really big or chunky pieces of meat etc. so a fine dice is better suited.

Sea to Summit’s Big River range come in six sizes but we think this 20-litre dry bag is a great all-rounder for day adventures.

This simple but well-made dry bag feels like great quality to handle – the nylon material is pleasingly thick and scratch-proof and the bottom of the bag is reinforced and scratch-resistant, so you can pop the pack down without a worry wherever you’re sorting out your kit.

I always prefer a dry bag with lash loops, and the Big River sports three made of durable webbing, making it easy to strap this bag to a paddleboard or tie it to a boat deck, the top of a kayak or the rack on your bike.

Foiling electric surfboards may have seemed like the ultimate superyacht toy, but wait until you see one of these new Pegasus foilers come flying past your boat.

Developed by Finnish start-up Foil.One, it’s an all-electric single-seater that combines the thrill and excitement of a high-performance foiling craft with the ease and simplicity of a bicycle.

Built entirely out of carbon fibre and with styling inspired by Formula One cars of the 1960s, it is capable of speeds up to 30 knots while flying a couple of feet above the water.

Rides like a bike

The secret of its user-friendly design is a unique analogue foiling set-up that combines steering, balance and ride height in a single intuitive mechanism.

Originally discovered by Japanese foiling pioneer Kotaro Horiuchi over 40 years ago but refined and perfected by Foil.One’s chief designer Eric Smits, it uses a steerable front foil linked to a pair of handles in the cockpit similar to those in a rowing eight or on a recumbent bicycle.

Leather wrapped steering handles deliberately mimic the look and feel of a bike

Pull the right hand lever and the whole front strut twists clockwise like a long thin rudder, causing the Pegasus to lean into a tight right turn.

Pull the left hand one and it twists anticlockwise causing it to pop back upright before leaning down into a left turn.

The beauty of this is that it behaves just like a bicycle, so anyone who can ride a bike will get the hang of balancing and steering it within a couple of minutes.

The other key innovation is a ‘surface-sensing wand’ that hangs off the back of the front strut and controls a central elevator flap on the trailing edge of the front foil.

In reality this is a fancy term for a hinged lever with a float at one end linked to a push rod at the other.

When the float makes contact with water, the drag from the water pushes the rod backwards, forcing the flap down and increasing the lift generated by the foil.

Cables link the handles to a carbon-fibre steering arm on top of the front foil

When the float lifts clear of the water, it falls forward again, tilting the flap up and reducing the amount of lift generated.

By constantly touching and then lifting clear of the water, the wand keeps adjusting the foil up and down so the hull stays flying above the water.

The only control the driver has is the ability to adjust the sensitivity of the mechanism to take account of the conditions and limit how high it flies.

The flatter the water, the higher you can ride and the harder you can carve it through the turns – up to a lean angle of 45 degrees.

Hatches give access to the batteries and enable the foils to lift; the Pegasus is built entirely out of carbon fibre

Silent power

Propulsion comes from a modest 10kW electric motor in the stern linked to a slender shaft running down the rear foil strut to a 90 degree gearbox and propeller.

A small wing-shaped foil just above it serves as both a ventilation plate and a lift generator.

At low speeds, the Pegasus behaves like a small displacement boat with the 1m deep foils acting as stabilising keels, but at 10 knots, the bow lifts clear of the water, followed shortly afterwards by the stern.

A foot throttle controls the speed, while the fixed rear foil can be adjusted manually to account for different driver weights.

Two 5kWh Torqeedo batteries provide the power, giving a run time of up to 2.5 hours at 20-25 knots for a range of around 50nm.

These can be taken out of the boat and charged at home or the whole craft can be lifted onto a trailer and towed behind a car.

Thanks to its lightweight carbon fibre construction, it weighs just 200kg and both foils slide up through the deck when not in use to reduce its draft.

Waterproof Torqeedo batteries in the bow and stern give up to 2.5 hours of foiling fun at 25 knots

While the colour scheme can be customised, this first one is finished in British Racing Green and Gold as a homage to the legendary 1960s Lotus 49 F1 car raced by the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill.

Foil.One even went to the trouble of creating an entire back story for a fictional British racing driver called Reggie Hawke to help promote the Pegasus.

With a starting price of €109,900 ex batteries and taxes, it will need all the help it can get but for superyacht owners in search of the ultimate toy or waterside dwellers with a penchant for eye-catching gadgets, this revolutionary electric foiler has the style and the technology to reward any early adopters.

And if sales go well, plans are already afoot for a two-seater Pegasus and even a full-sized foiling sportsboat.

Until recently, if you wanted to fit a gyro stabiliser to a sub-40ft boat there was only one place to go – Seakeeper. Its compact Seakeeper 3 model was the only gyro small enough and light enough to fit on this size of planing boat and thanks to its DC motor, it could be run off the craft’s existing 12V circuitry rather than a separate AC generator.

Now, however, the market for compact stabiliser systems is turning into a veritable battleground as other marine equipment manufacturers jump on the gyro bandwagon.

Italian company Quick was first to respond with a range of new MC² gyro stabilisers for boats as small as 30ft and now Dometic is joining the fray with a brand new gyro of its own. Called the Dometic DG3, it is aimed at exactly the same 35-41ft boat sector as the Seakeeper 3 and Quick MC² 10 but claims to offer a number of significant benefits over its immediate rivals, including a faster spool-up time, reduced power draw and lower maintenance costs.

Dometic’s DG3 stabiliser is almost maintenance-free and backed by a three-year warranty

Low power consumption

The key to the Dometic DG3’s performance is a heavier but slower spinning flywheel that generates the same stabilising force as a Seakeeper 3 (3,000 N-M-S) without the extreme high speeds and the stresses this puts on the bearings and bushings.

Nor does it need to be encased in a high pressure vacuum sphere as the DG3’s flywheel is only spinning at 4,700rpm, rather than the Seakeeper’s 8,450rpm, so air resistance isn’t a major issue. This helps offset the extra weight of the DG3’s larger flywheel and makes maintenance much easier.

Seakeeper 3

The second big innovation is the adoption of all-electric ‘roller screw’ technology, rather than a hydraulic ram, to swing the flywheel back and forth and generate the correcting forces that stop the boat rolling from side to side. This is said to have a number of benefits – by removing the need for high pressure hoses and seals, it reduces the chance of leaks and negates the need for hydraulic fluid changes. It also enables the push-pull forces on the ram to be recaptured and used to generate electrical current.

Fast spool-up

The final part of the equation is a powerful 48V lithium-ion battery. This is what provides the compact brushless electric motor with the power to spool up that big flywheel so quickly. It can reach its maximum RPM in just 16.5 minutes (a Seakeeper 3 takes 50 minutes), and starts to provide meaningful stabilisation in as little as 9.5 minutes (29 minutes for the Seakeeper).

The motor can also act as a generator when spooling down the flywheel, helping it to recover energy that would otherwise be lost as heat and bringing it to a halt much faster. The spool down time is just 20 minutes instead of three hours or more for rival gyros – handy if you want to sleep without the hum of a gyro.

Another clever side effect is that the battery acts as a buffer between the boat’s main electrical system and the gyro so the alternators of the boat’s engines are recharging the 48V battery rather than driving the gyro itself. This means that it’s compatible with 12V, 24V and 48V systems with minimal adaptation.

Reduced servicing

A new type of heavy-duty bearing, featuring patent-pending cooling of the inner race and a corrosion-resistant titanium heat exchanger, is said to be so effective that the bearings should last the lifetime of the product. In fact, other than visual inspections, clearing the sea strainer and descaling and winterising the raw water side of the cooling system, the DG3 is designed to be maintenance-free for life. There’s also a comprehensive three-year, 3,000-hour warranty.

The result of all this development work is a new gyro stabiliser with almost the exact same physical dimensions and weight of a Seakeeper 3, and the same theoretical ability to stabilise a 35-41ft craft underway as well as at anchor but with fewer servicing requirements and a power draw of just 260-750W (depending on how hard it’s working to counteract the sea conditions). One scenario where it’s said to be particularly effective is quelling small to moderate swells due to the speed and precision of its all-electric precession actuator.

Dometic DG3 verdict

Whether the Dometic DG3 lives up to all these claims remains to be seen. In practice, the software that monitors the sea state and controls the gyro is just as important as the hardware itself when it comes to delivering a comfortable, seasick-free ride. Seakeeper also has years of real-world data and a slight price advantage ($39,300 vs $43,999) in its favour.

Testing and feedback will help decide who wins this battle but whatever the outcome, three major players competing for your custom can only be a good thing for boat owners.

I’ve always had a soft spot for clever design. Give me something that folds, packs down, clicks into place, and floats and I’m all in. So when the Oru Lake folding kayak landed at my desk for trial in Southampton, I rounded up a crew of curious testers and got stuck in at my yacht club over a sunny week.

We unfolded it carefully the first time, following the instructions like it was flat-pack furniture from an unusually seaworthy IKEA. Second time, same again. But after that, the folding rhythm started to make sense. Crease here, clip there, twist that toggle, and suddenly we had a kayak. Though my paddling volunteer described it as a scary thing t unfold at first, I only felt a mild fear or getting a papercut on a sharp edge.

It’s incredibly light. At just over 7kg, it’s more like carrying a large beach bag than a boat. That alone makes it a winner for apartment dwellers, small-boat owners, or anyone who doesn’t fancy strapping a full-length kayak to the roof of the car.

It’s not designed for anything rough, you won’t be taking it down whitewater or battling chop in the Solent, but on flat water, it’s a blast. Stable, responsive enough, and surprisingly comfy. Everyone from wiry teens to reluctant grown-ups gave it a go, hopping in and out. Some bigger folk loaded it right up to the limit and it did look like they might be going swimming rather than paddling, but it was a hit with the younger people at my yacht club and there was a queue of people wanting to have a go with it.

Some commented on the disconcerting effect of being able to see the water through the floor panel as they are semi translucent, others thought it was “cool”

It comes with the branded up Oru paddle, which felt well-balanced, and the Oru buoyancy aid, which was genuinely comfy.

Is it a performance kayak? No. Is it fun? Absolutely.

The Oru Lake isn’t just a kayak, it’s an invitation. To play, to explore the quiet corners of a harbour, to paddle out on still evenings and drift. It’s not trying to be a sea kayak or a serious bit of expedition kit. But for what it is, a foldable, portable fun machine, it absolutely delivers.

I’ll admit it straight away, I do tend to use a vacuum cleaner when I want to procrastinate over another job I prefer to do less than vacuuming, such as my accounts or tax return. I was worried the Dyson Car+Boat wasn’t going to give me that vacuuming fix, since the battery life was so short, on paper at least. Anyway, that fear was short lived, this thing is bloody brilliant!

After just a day of it arriving, I was hooked. It’s like a mini dopamine hit each time I wizz around the little floor space in my van or boat, or my office come to think of it.

Fast forward a few weeks of living aboard the boat and knocking around the van with the Dyson Car+Boat handheld, I’m prepared to say it: this is hands-down the best handheld vacuum I’ve ever used.

And I’ve tried a few. I’ve got a Black and Decker 12v cleaner on my other boat and whilst it’s ok I guess, it doesn’t fill me with the slightest joy and it’s loud! This one, on it’s less powerful setting is quiet enough for me to carry on in a conversation. Turn up the power and it’ll have your crevices spotless in seconds.

Power in a Pint-Sized Package

This thing absolutely sucks! In the best possible way. From the first go, it tackled dried mud, crumbs, pet fluff, and the inevitable trail of sand that creeps into my office, van and boat after a bit of coastal rowing. The power boost mode is like strapping a teeny tiny jet engine to your cleaning. I saved it for the real crud: the grit in the companionway steps, the fur in the corners, and whatever mystery flakes of I don’t care to think what they are, in the hard to reach nooks.

It’s genuinely impressive how much muck this thing can lift.

Attachments You’ll Actually Use

What really makes the Dyson Car+Boat stand out are the attachments.

The motorised mini brush annihilates pet hair from upholstery. The black fury, known as my chihuahua leaves little whisps about the place that look like spiders. Well, they’re gone. And the Dyson is quiet enough not to bother her from her bed, terrified as she is of vacuums, this one, she doesn’t mind at all.

The crevice tool got down the sides of seats, around cushions, in various galley crevices and even my computer keyboard.

The other one, not sure what they call it,  with the brush on it is good for getting rid of dust on various surfaces. A lampshade got brush vacuumed, then so too did my computer monitor, then the office blinds…

Everything snaps together with a satisfying click.

Battery Life & Charging

Battery life’s a solid 20-30 minutes on standard, and about 8 minutes on full turbo, which is fine, because if you’re vacuuming for longer than that in a camper or on a boat, you’ve probably got bigger problems.

Charging is via a dedicated Dyson adapter, which I have annoyingly lost and found a couple of times now, because, although that run time seems short, you’ll be surprised how little you have to charge it, since, if you do a little each day, just a few seconds of sucking away the dog hair or crumbs etc, then it will last a couple of weeks easily between charges.

Emptying & Maintenance

Dust bin emptying is satisfyingly straightforward, no cloud of sneeze-dust, no fiddling with bags. Just pill up the catch, and out drops the grime (and possibly a lost screw or other thing accidentally sucked up in the frenzy of cleaning).

I’ll be honest, I wanted to dislike it as I’m not a fan of Dyson generally, a bit like the over hyped lifestyle products we find from other manufacturers, they seem all form over function for  my liking. The garish purple stuff, isn’t to my taste either. But the Dyson Car and Camper handheld vacuum is the real deal. It gets the job done and in the easiest, quietest way possible.
Would I recommend it? Unreservedly.

I’ve seen a lot of inflatable paddleboards over the years, some more like glorified pool lilos than serious craft, but the Red Paddle 12’6″ Sport stands out straight away as a board built for actual paddlers, not just holiday dabblers.

To put it to the test, I handed it over to a seasoned paddleboarder, Garry Hughes, who clocks up serious daily miles up and down Southampton Water. It’s a really open stretch of water and is not for novices. I followed with tender and electric motor to get pics. He went so fast, I had to go flat out just to stand a chance of catching up.

When I finally caught up, he looked at me and said, “this is brilliant! It’s so fast and tracks so straight. It’s really easy to cover some decent miles. It’s a proper bit of kit!”

That “proper” feeling is something Red Paddle have absolutely nailed. From the batten-reinforced rails ( we did huff and puff a bit shoving those in)  to the dual-layer MSL construction, everything about this board says long-term reliability. No wobble, no cheap flex.

While my paddler expert was out slicing past moored yachts, I spent some quality time with the gear, starting with the wheeled carry bag. It’s not just robust, it’s exceptional. Big zips, smooth wheels, solid handles, and enough space to pack the board, pump, paddle, and even a bit a space left for other kit, though it does start to become a bit heavy to lift.

The strap design is clever, with options to tuck away the rucksack straps to make wheeling it even easier, or to adjust the shape of the straps for the size of person using them. The fancy flaps and velcro panels and all the little details do add to the weight though. so the fancy bag is a trade off in terms of light weight and simple, or heavier weight and all the bells and whistles.

The Titan II dual-chamber pump deserves a mention of its own. It turns the usually sweaty job of inflating a board into something you can actually look forward to ( no not really, nobody looks forward to that bit do they unless they own an electric pump). Dual action gets the bulk of the air in fast, then you flip the valve and top off to a rock-solid pressure without breaking too much of a sweat.

Assembly is as easy as you’d hope, slide in the RSS battens (wet them first), pump it to 15–22psi, and off you go.

The Red Paddle 12’6″ Sport is one of those bits of kit that reminds you why some brands cost a little more, because they get the details right. From the tracking and glide to the pump, bag, and board feel, it’s clear this is designed for real paddlers.

Whether you’re putting in daily miles, loading up for a mini-adventure, or just want a board that won’t let you down in three seasons’ time, this one earns its keep. It’s not cheap, but it is excellent.

Temo 1000 Electric Outboard – A Compact Powerhouse with Surprising Finesse

I’ve had my fair share of encounters with outboards over the years—from temperamental two-strokes to whisper-quiet torquey electrics. So when I finally got my hands on the much anticipated Temo 1000, I was keen to put it through the standard paces on my trusty Zodiac cadet 230, going to and from my Rustler 31 on a mooring in Southampton to a club pontoon and around and about the houses, so to speak,  to see what it would be like to live with.

Real-World Use: Quiet, Confident, Capable

The Temo 1000 feels fairly sturdy to mang handle. It’s relatively easy to carry, easy to mount, and the minimalist controls make it very beginner-friendly.  The balance of friction on the twist grip throttle and the steering. It’s stiff enough to hold its course if I let go briefly to adjust a line, sort out the dog tangled up round my feet or rummage in my bag for a phone to take pics. The motor doesn’t walk off to one side so that’s a nice point that I’ve not had with other outboards yet.

The removable 1kWh battery is handy. I can charge it inside the boat or van, and I don’t have to faff about lugging the whole outboard up the pontoon. I can just spin that round and stow it, still attached to the bracket, but facing into the dinghy rather than over hanging over the water. The battery slots in with a firm click, and I’ve had no issues with connections or water ingress so far, however, I do have a mild concern that the battery isn’t actually retained in anyway, so either it could get easily stolen or fall out if the dinghy and motor were accidentally inverted. (this has happened to me with a lightweight tender a couple of times in the past).

I found the transom bracket attachment to be veyr easy to mount and unmount the motor, infact, scarily too easy to unmount. In my un cafeinated state  in the early morning I very nearly flipped the wrong bit, trying to release the motor back into the water from it’s “up” position and very nearly released it IN to the water completely. I think if I lived with this, I’d put a lanyard across that to make sure I couldn’t accidentally pull the wrong bit.

The catch to hold the motor central and to stop it swinging about when lifted up feels a bit sub-par compared to the rest of the design. It does the job, but it is fiddly and hard to see if it has engaged properly in the dark.

How fast will it go mister?

We all have to give a motor the flat out test don’t we and see what’ll it do…  it pushed my Zodiac Cadet 230 and my meaty lump of a body up to 5 knots. That’s respectable. It won’t plane, of course, but it will get you off the anchorage or to shore without a sweat.

While 30 minutes at full chat is plenty for most dinghy trips, if you’re the sort who likes to cruise the whole bay, or wants to go 10 miles to the pub and back against the tide both ways, well it’s worth planning your range. At slower speeds you get much more out of it, in fact I motored about for a week going up and down Southampton water and only managed to deplete the battery by half when using half power. But if you’re in a hurry all the time going flat out everywhere, then keep an eye on that battery gauge.

It’s particularly well suited to inflatables and light tenders, boats that don’t need massive grunt but do benefit from smooth, silent power. The steering range is excellent, giving great manoeuvrability, especially in tight marina spaces. The blade style means you keep some steerage even when you’ve stopped running the motor. 

And let’s not forget the peace and quiet. You can talk while underway without shouting. The sound of water slapping the hull is louder than the motor.

If you’re after a lightweight, quiet outboard that doesn’t stink of petrol or grumble like a lawnmower, the Temo 1000 should be on your shortlist. And if it’s your first electric? You might never go back.

The CFX family of compressor coolers sit firmly at the premium end of the options I picked up for my cooler for boaters test . Robustly constructed with a lightweight shell, a tough removable lid with a click-shut latch and stainless steel hinges, plus reinforced corners, four sizes of Dometic CFX2 coolers are available: 28l, 37l, 45l and 57l.

For this test I opted for the mid-size Dometic CFX2 37l unit, which according to Dometic can carry enough provisions to last 2-4 adults 1-3 days.

Judging by the internal space available, that translates to around a case of wine plus half a dozen beers. To help pack and unpack, the Dometic CFX2 comes complete with a deep internal basket. There’s also an internal LED light – bring on the midnight feast!

The Dometic CFX2 also features an easy-to-use interface for setting the temperature. The display is neatly integrated into the leading edge of the cooler and it’s just a matter of pressing the ‘set’ button then upping or downing the target temperature by way of the two large “+” and “-“ buttons.

This being the 21st century, the Dometic CFX2 naturally has its own app, which allows remote temperature setting and monitoring, and the unit has built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. There’s also a USB charging point built into the display, not exactly necessary but a nice touch nonetheless.

In operation, the Dometic CFX2 is quiet and efficient. It achieved our target temperature of -1°C comfortably within an hour. With a temperature range of +20°C to -22°C, the unit can act as a fridge or a freezer, although Dometic say it is not suitable for fast-freezing food.

Capable of operating on a range of power supplies – 12/24V DC or 100-240V AC – the Dometic CFX2 37 can be plugged in almost anywhere.

The only criticism I would offer is that it’s a largish unit that’s a handful to move even when empty if only a single pair of hands are on tap. But if there’s two of you, one on each of the handles at either end, shifting it becomes child’s play – making the Dometic CFX2 37 a great family size coolbox.

Think Texas and you think big – and Texan brand Igloo certainly embraces the mantra for everything it does is larger than life and the Igloo BMX 25 encapsulates that mantra, even if not in volume.

Today part of the Dometic group, Igloo began trading in 1947 and made its name with the ‘Playmate’ cooler, aka ‘America’s Lunchbox’ (stop sniggering at the back) and since then has gone on to become one of the world’s best cooler brands.

While the Igloo range goes right up to a whopping 125-quart cooler, we opted something far more discrete; the 23-litres BMX 25. When we say discrete we only mean in terms of size, for everything else about the Igloo BMX 25 shouts just as loud as all Igloo’s other goodies.

Portable and compact and available in a variety of colours, the Igloo BMX 25 is a tough, durable go-anywhere type of cool box. With steel kick plates, hefty hinges and chunky T-latches adorning its somewhat angular blow-moulded shell, it’s billed as the ideal companion for fishing and just about any other outdoor pursuit you can think of – the only thing you can’t do is ride it; it’s not that sort of BMX.

Enhancing its marine-application credentials are four tie-down slots integrated into the lid and rubber anti-skid pads on the base.

Best of all though – and fishermen pay attention here – is that it has a fish-measuring ruler moulded into the lid, so you boast exactly how big the one that got away was! The one thing we weren’t so keen on was the BMX 25’s handle, for while its big and strong enough to take a pounding, we found it a little on the clunky side.

Ultimately, whether or not this cooler box appeals will be very much a personal matter of opinion; its rootin’-tootin’ he-man looks won’t be to everyone’s taste, but if you’re looking for a box that can withstand a pummelling, the Igloo BMX 25 awaits your call.
