The new model will be offered with inboard and outboard engines to maximise its appeal. Inboard power will come from a pair of Volvo Penta D6-440 DPI diesel sterndrives. However, it is the outboard-powered version which is expected to be the bigger seller due to the extra performance and storage space it offers.

With the biggest-twin 450hp Yamaha XTO V8s or 400hp Mercury Verado V10s it should be capable of 48 knots and 46 knots respectively. As with the recent Windy 37 Shamal and Windy 34 Alizé models, the exterior styling is by Espen Øino, the Norwegian designer best known for his work with German superyacht builder Lürssen.

The interior, meanwhile, is from British studio Design Unlimited, which also does many of Sunseeker’s. The most distinctive element of the Windy SR38 is a new semi-enclosed hard top linking the windscreen to a pair of contrasting radar arches amidships.

In conjunction with fully glazed side panels and sliding doors on either side of the helm station, it provides full protection for the entire front half of the cockpit. The other big news is a pair of folding aft bulwarks that drop down to expand the deck space at the more exposed end of the cockpit.

There’s bathing platform access to the water here as well as a sunpad on both inboard and outboard variants. Outboard models also benefit from a large lazarette beneath the sunpad, which will accommodate docking stations for a pair of Sea Bobs.

Amidships, an L-shaped sofa to starboard with a folding table that expands to meet the facing bench seat creates a big sociable dining area. Turkish shipyard Limitless presented its latest creation, the Limitless 45, at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, with the bold promise of ushering in new era in luxury yachting.

The vessel showcases innovative design and functionality, starting with a high-low bathing platform that transforms into a beach club behind the engines, offering easy water access. Hydraulic fold-out wings increase the beam by 4ft creating an open beach club atmosphere.

Be still our beating hearts. The 2023 Fort Lauderale Boat Show will see the official unwrapping of the newest addition to the Dutch Vanquish line-up, the brand new Vanquish VQ55 Sports Line. Two stats you’ll like: 3,000 horsepower from its five Mercury Verado 600hp V12 outboards, and a literally eye-watering 70-knot top speed.

This is the big brother to the GRP-hulled VQ40 Sports Line featuring a center console design by the former Citroen car designer Guido de Groot. With seats for 18 of your closest friends, it’s aimed squarely at the Miami-slash-St.Trop-slash-Ibiza sun-worshipping crowd.

And like the VQ40, its hull is molded in GRP rather than the more typical aluminum used in pretty much all other Vanquish models. No doubt plastic makes it quicker and less-pricy to build.

Vanquish claims that this new 55 is the first in its class to be designed in a wind tunnel. Gazing at that slammed-back windshield, air-cleaving axe-bow, and menacing, hull-side air intakes, the thing looks like it’s hitting 70 knots standing still.

Not a fan of outboards? Vanquish will happily build you a VQ55 with a pair of Nanni N16 1,200hp V8 diesels coupled to waterjets. But you’d have to make do with a more sedate 50-knot top end. It’s still quicker than a Wajer 55 though.

Maybe think of it as saving the best ’til last. American powerboat legend Formula Boats is finally getting into the big-size, big-power center console market with its brand new Formula 457 being unveiled at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

It’ll be the new big brother to the impressive 38-foot 387CC that the Decatur, Indiana-based builder introed a year ago. And to widen its appeal, Formula will be offering a 457 hardtop Sport model along with a Fish model with an upper helm station.

Founded by the late, great Don Aronow in Miami’s Thunderboat Row back in 1962, Formula has always focused its attention on building bowriders and crossover coupes from 24 feet to 50.

This new center console Formula 457 – it’s almost 50 feet overall – should have plenty of appeal, largely through its legndary smooth-riding, easy-planing stepped hull design that Formula perfected from its offshore powerboat racing designs.

There’s nothing too ground-breaking in the 457’s deck layout. Up in the bow there’s the usual raised-up sunpad and wrap-around forward seating. In the big aft cockpit, there’s a rear bench and wet bar.

Beneath that extended hardtop, there’s two rows of three seats, with the forward section air conditioned, with a/c for the second row on the options list. Below deck, there’s a cosy cabin boasting 6ft 6in headroom, U-shaped seating that doubles as a bed, and a suprisingly spacious head with an oversize stand-up shower.

Naturally it’ll be quick. Triple 600hp Mercury Verado V12 outboards are the motors of choice, with 700 gallons of fuel for a decent cruising range. No word on top speed, but 50 knots seems a good guesstimate.

That’s the good news. The less-good is that Formula will be using FLIBS to unveil detailed models of the two new 457s. The actual boat won’t be shown until next February’s Miami Boat Show. Seems Formula does like to keep us waiting.

You could hardly call it a downsizing. But New Jersey-based Viking Yachts – acknowledged builder of the Rolls-Royce of offshore fishing boats – is replacing its flagship Viking 92 with a Viking 90. Not that it was by choice. Since the 92’s introduction in 2015, Viking has built 21 of them, at around $12 million apiece, and wanted to continue.

But tough new emission regs mandated by the International Maritime Organization, would have meant that any new Viking 92 had to be fitted with complex exhaust treatment technology, called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

That, according to Viking, would have added weight, reduced performance, made engine room maintenance a nightmare, and sent the yacht’s price tag soaring. So it dropped the 92 and developed a brand new Viking 90.

The key was a switch to the latest Caterpillar and MTU 16-cylinder diesels. The base engine is now a 1,925hp C32A, with the option of either a 2,433hp CAT C32B, or a mighty 2,635hp MTU M96L.

Viking recently pulled the wraps off the new Viking 90 Skybridge model with its luxurious, enclosed second-level. At the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, it’ll be unveiling the more deep-sea fishing focused Viking 90 Open Bridge, which comes – as the name suggests – with an open flybridge.

Think of it as evolution, not so much revolution. Florida-based Chris-Craft has taken the oh-so-successful formula for its much-loved Catalina center console line-up of 24, 30 and 34-foot models, and used it to pop-out a new Chris-Craft Catalina 28.

Debuting at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, this new 28fter is arguably the most-appealing size for day-boaters looking for a fun day out on the water with friends and family. We’re counting comfy seating for at least 12, and as many cupholders.

While it’s a new hull design, those Chris-Craft design cues, like the signature Carolina Flare bow, gorgeous reverse transom, and smooth-riding bottom, are all there. And with the beam now stretched to a generous 9ft 1in, there’s extra room to walk around.

Of course, for fisher-folk there’s a fold-up aft bench seat, a plethora of rod holders, and a hull-side door for hauling in that 400lb grouper. You can even opt for a new-design reversible helm seat to watch all the action at the stern.

As with any good center console, there’s a hardtop over the helm, though Chris-Craft manages to add plenty of style with its lid. At the back, you can opt for a SureShade to cover the cockpit.

Aquila 47 Molokai

The Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, making its debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, is the new big brother to the popular, cuddy-cabined Molokai 28.

Featuring a new, aggressive double-stepped hull design with a raised tunnel between the twin hulls to create less pounding in big seas, the 49-foot long Molokai should make light work of heavy weather. To add strength, bulkheads are made of carbon fiber, with the hardtop also made of carbon to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity.

The cat’s 14ft 7in beam should also provide plenty of deck space and solid footing for reeling in the big one, with hull doors on both sides for hauling your catch into the roomy cockpit.

Azimut Magellano 60

The style of the Azimut Magellano 60 is a world away from the radical cutaways and faceted hull angles of the Italian yard’s Fly, S and Verve lines. In place of unflinching modernity, what we have here feels far more classical and self-effacing and as the new entry point to the four-strong Magellano line, that’s exactly as it should be.

There’s a clean, pared back linearity to the external form and a modest confidence to the trim that makes this boat feel quite timeless.

The block-coloured hull and the weightlessness of the upper deck also lend this boat a much lower profile than you might expect of a 60ft flybridge cruiser – and at the aft end of the superstructure, like impeccably debonair go-faster stripes, those elegant teak louvres have become something of a Magellano trademark.

Cigarette Racing 52 Thunder

The sound of thunder isn’t exactly uncommon in Florida in October. But if you’re hearing a deeper rumble around the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show docks this year, it’ll likely be coming from the latest speed machine from Miami’s Cigarette Racing.

The brand new Cigarette Racing 52 Thunder Center Console packs a 3,000 supercharged horsepower gut-punch, courtesy of six brand new Mercury Racing 500R V10 outboards hanging off the back. Flat out Cigarette says it’s good for over 80 knots, or 92mph.

This new 52-footer neatly slots into the Cigarette line-up between the 42-foot Auroris and flagship 52 Tirranna. But in addition to simply going fast, the focus here is on entertaining friends and family out on the water.

Fairline Phantom 65

The new Fairline Phantom 65 nestles somewhere between the Fairline Squadron 68 and the Fairline Targa 65 GTO.

It’s 4ft shorter and five tonnes lighter than the Squadron 68 yet somehow manages to pack in exactly the same three- or four-cabin layout below decks as well as a crew cabin and tender garage.

On the face of it, the Phantom seems to offer a bit more of everything than the Targa while still looking considerably sportier and more manageable than the Squadron.

Numarine 37XP

This is the 37m version of the Numarine explorer range, built from a steel hull and GRP superstructure, and it is designed for long-range cruising with an enormous amount of volume and in a great deal of comfort.

Its full displacement hull is powered by a pair of 800hp engines for a top speed of 12 knots, but dial that back to 8 knots and you’re looking at a maximum cruising range of around 6,000nm, thanks to a 52-tonne fuel capacity.

The first thing you notice when you step on board the Numarine 37XP is the beach club, which is accessed via the folding transom that folds down to reveal a sea level terrace shaded by a canopy and boasting a bar, water toys and much more besides.

The Princess Y95 will be making its US show debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show

When Princess Yachts launched the tri-deck Princess X95 back in 2020, it always planned to offer a more conventional open flybridge version too. The fact that it has taken Princess two years to get round to it is actually good news.

Concerns that the X95’s bold new looks might prove too much for some to swallow have shown to be largely unfounded. As a result, the yard has been so busy churning out X95s (18 built with a further eight on order) that the Princess Y95 got temporarily shifted onto the back burner.

Now it has finally arrived, we can’t see the workers on the Y95 production line getting much downtime either! Featuring a full-length open flybridge with an enclosed bridge deck a few steps forward and down from it, the new Y-model has a sleeker, more conventional profile than the X95.

It loses out on that boat’s spectacular skylounge and the “country kitchen” option of an open-plan main deck with a big galley/dining area under the windscreen but the rest of the interior matches it blow for blow and the upshot is even more outside entertaining space to revel in.

Riva 76 Perseo Super

How time flies. It’s eight years since we tested the original Riva 76 Perseo at the Cannes Yachting Festival, a sleek and stupendously competent piece of luxury engineering that gave us a terrific high-speed run in one-metre seas, like a thoroughbred racehorse out for a gallop.

It didn’t break a sweat. And the fit and finish were everything you would hope for in a Riva – tasteful, opulent, and beautifully executed. In fact there was something so marvellous about it that we gave it a Motor Boat Award. Unimprovable is the word that springs to mind.

Nevertheless, improvements are claimed for this new Riva 76 Perseo Super version. Various interior décor schemes are offered, which change the look quite markedly: light or dark lacquered oak panelling, for example, or lustrous rosewood if you prefer.

Riviera 585 SUV

America’s passionate love affair with big, honking SUVs should bode well for the new Riviera 585 SUV, the latest addition to Aussie-based Riviera Yachts‘ five-model “Sport Utility Vessel” line-up.

The badge is a bit confusing in that bow-to-stern, this sleek-looking hardtop coupe measures in at 65 feet. Add to that the SUV’s 18ft 7in beam and it means a whole lot of space inside and out.

Take the dual-level cockpit at the back. At swim platform level, there’s a huge, teak-floored deck with barbecue grille, sink and ice-maker. Three steps up takes you into what’s arguably the 585’s best feature; it’s cosy, well-protected upper cockpit.

Sirena 78

Prior to 2017, very few people outside the industry had even heard of Sirena Yachts, which until that point had largely stayed in the shadows, building boats for other brands. But then it launched its own range of motor boats and in the five short years since then, it has grown to become a serious player in its own right.

Its latest model, the all-new Sirena 78, takes things to another level – literally. Thanks to a top deck that can be left open, semi-enclosed or fully enclosed, it is effectively available as a tri-deck yacht, a conventional two-deck flybridge boat with a hard top or something in between.

Once you’ve settled on which of these variants you want, you then get to decide between multiple interior layout options and three different design themes.

The Sunreef 80 Power Eco comes bristling with solar panels

If you like the idea of free, renewable energy but don’t like sails, Sunreef would love to have a word. The Polish shipyard’s newest power cat is this Sunreef 80 Power Eco, available in both hybrid and pure electric versions, that positively bristles with solar panels.

These produce a claimed maximum of 36kWp in bright sunshine, although with many of the solar panels mounted along the sides, that figure will only be achievable if the sun can be persuaded to shine on both sides at the same time.

So it might occasionally be necessary to top up the batteries using the generators. The batteries themselves are ‘ultralight’, with an energy density of around 200Wh per kilogramme, and you can choose between 360kW and 720kW of motive power.

Sunseeker Ocean 182

Originally built as an open flybridge boat with a hardtop to provide shade, the new Sunseeker Ocean 182 will have a fully covered area at the forward end of the upper deck.

This brings two major benefits: first, the bridge station moves upstairs, freeing up more socialising space on the main deck, and second, the enclosed part of the top deck can be climate controlled for use in hot and cold countries.

Prospective owners can choose if the newly covered area is left open at the back with just a security hatch over the internal stairs or closed off with sliding glass doors where the roof line ends.

Tiara 48 LE

Tiara calls it a “power-actuated rotating lounge module”. You might think of it as a new spin on cockpit design. Literally. At the tap of a button, the big-and-comfy cockpit sofa can rotate a full 180 degrees.

Spin the sofa 90 degrees either side, or the full 180, and you get a terrific, unobstructed view of the kids splashing in the water. Or the sunset. Or that ooh-and-ahhh firework show. And it can lock it in place at any angle you want.

Rotate it 90 degrees to port, power down the large terrace-cum-swim platform and water views don’t get much better. And the spinning sofa comes with a lovely varnished table attached, so your sunset cocktail goes with you.

Viking 90 Open Bridge

You could hardly call it a downsizing. But New Jersey-based Viking Yachts – acknowledged builder of the Rolls-Royce of offshore fishing boats – is replacing its flagship Viking 92 with a Viking 90. Not that it was by choice. Since the 92’s introduction in 2015, Viking has built 21 of them, at around $12 million apiece, and wanted to continue.

But tough new emission regs mandated by the International Maritime Organization, would have meant that any new Viking 92 had to be fitted with complex exhaust treatment technology, called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

That, according to Viking, would have added weight, reduced performance, made engine room maintenance a nightmare, and sent the yacht’s price tag soaring. So it dropped the 92 and developed a brand new Viking 90.

Created in collaboration with Studio Vallicelli, the new Wally WHY150 uses a raised pilothouse design to create what it calls “unparalleled exterior spaces” – but that approach also has a very striking impact on the inside.

In the main deck saloon, floor-to-ceiling glass is paired with flush decking and more than 8ft of headroom to create a profound sense of openness and light.

The Aquila 47 Molokai power catamaran, making its debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, is the new big brother to the popular, cuddy-cabined Molokai 28.

Featuring a new, aggressive double-stepped hull design with a raised tunnel between the twin hulls to create less pounding in big seas, the 49-foot long Molokai should make light work of heavy weather.

To add strength, bulkheads are made of carbon fiber, with the hardtop also made of carbon to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity.

The cat’s 14ft 7in beam should also provide plenty of deck space and solid footing for reeling in the big one, with hull doors on both sides for hauling your catch into the roomy cockpit.

And when the family comes along for the ride, the new built-in-China Molokai offers a surprising level of comfort and luxury. Up on the bow are three oversized loungers, while the helm features two rows of lovely individual, varnished wood-framed seats with a big, three-seat cockpit sofa.

The sound of thunder isn’t exactly uncommon in Florida in October. But if you’re hearing a deeper rumble around the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show docks this year, it’ll likely be coming from the latest speed machine from Miami’s Cigarette Racing.

The brand new Cigarette Racing 52 Thunder Center Console packs a 3,000 supercharged horsepower gut-punch, courtesy of six brand new Mercury Racing 500R V10 outboards hanging off the back. Flat out Cigarette says it’s good for over 80 knots, or 92mph.

This new 52-footer neatly slots into the Cigarette line-up between the 42-foot Auroris and flagship 52 Tirranna. But in addition to simply going fast, the focus here is on entertaining friends and family out on the water.

That’s why the extended aft cockpit can double as a party dancefloor. Or, at the press of a button, a table levitates out of the floor for al fresco dining for eight, with an outdoor kitchen for cooking dinner.

Up in the bow there’s a trio of stretch-out loungers with a big U-shaped sofa for six, while at the helm under that carbon fiber hardtop, there’s two rows of racing-style seats – four up front, and three behind.

When the Florida heat gets a little toasty, there’s a roomy cabin below decks with a full-size bed, enclosed toilet with shower, a custom sofa and hull side windows that go opaque at the touch of a button. All that eye-blindingly-white leather is sourced from fancy Italian supplier Poltrona Frau.

Of course you can specify pretty much any color scheme you want, but we’re quite partial to the show boat’s head-spinning red, white and black combo. Subtle? Not so much.

America’s passionate love affair with big, honking SUVs should bode well for the new Riviera 585 SUV, the latest addition to Aussie-based Riviera Yachts‘ five-model “Sport Utility Vessel” line-up.

The badge is a bit confusing in that bow-to-stern, this sleek-looking hardtop coupe measures in at 65 feet. Add to that the SUV’s 18ft 7in beam and it means a whole lot of space inside and out.

Take the dual-level cockpit at the back. At swim platform level, there’s a huge, teak-floored deck with barbecue grille, sink and ice-maker. Three steps up takes you into what’s arguably the 585’s best feature; it’s cosy, well-protected upper cockpit.

Here, shielded by the hardtop and side windows, there’s an L-shaped sofa and hi-lo table. On the opposite side is a huge lounging pad for curling up with a good book. And it’s all on the same level as the saloon; slide open the big tinted glass door, and raise-up the tinted half-window by the galley, and everything is wide open.

Below decks it’s like a Tardis with much more space than you’d imagine. The full-beam, amidships owner’s cabin is huge, with a big, centerline bed and breakfast table for two at the side, all brightened up by oversized hull glass. Heck, there’s even a walk-in closet and a separate laundry room.

Tucked in the bow, there’s a guest double, with a roomy twin-bed cabin close by that transforms into a double. And the quality and craftsmanship through the entire boat is first rate.

And the best part, this new Riviera 585 SUV is a great-looking boat, with an old-school raked bow and swooping profile that gives it the appearance of some offshore fishing boat. But it looks modern, courtesy of that big-windowed hardtop and generous hull-side windows. This thing will turn heads.

Standard power is a pair of 900hp Volvo D13 diesels mated to IPS pod drives, with the option of 1,000hp versions. Top speed with the bigger engines is 35 knots, with a 400 nautical-mile range at 21 knots.

Tiara calls it a “power-actuated rotating lounge module”. You might think of it as a new spin on cockpit design. Literally. At the tap of a button, the big-and-comfy cockpit sofa can rotate a full 180 degrees.

Spin the sofa 90 degrees either side, or the full 180, and you get a terrific, unobstructed view of the kids splashing in the water. Or the sunset. Or that ooh-and-ahhh firework show. And it can lock it in place at any angle you want.

Rotate it 90 degrees to port, power down the large terrace-cum-swim platform and water views don’t get much better. And the spinning sofa comes with a lovely varnished table attached, so your sunset cocktail goes with you.

This Tiara 48 LE is the new big brother to the family-owned, Holland, Michigan builder’s popular 43 LE cruiser, though it feels much bigger inside and out.

Step up from the cockpit into the saloon and you get a full 360-degree view courtesy of huge windows and supermodel-thin roof supports. And there’s a real indoor/outdoor feel from the sliding rear door and the drop-down glass panel with the galley right there.

It’s a terrific helm design too, with a full glass Garmin touchscreen set-up, and matching twin screens in front of the two-seat co-pilot bench. An oversize sunroof panel above adds to the feeling of airiness.

Below decks there’s an ensuite owner’s cabin in the bow and a clever full-beam ensuite guest cabin amidships. This comes with twin berths that slide together to make a double. It could have been the master cabin but for its reduced headroom.

Tiara has close ties with Mercury, so the power source of choice is a trio of 600hp Mercury Verado V12s hanging off the back. Flat out, they’ll punch the Tiara 48 LE to a 50-knot top speed.

It’s not cheap at right on $2 million before options – the similar-priced Cruisers 50 GLS will be a big rival. But that cockpit design will definitely put you in a spin.

The style of the Azimut Magellano 60 is a world away from the radical cutaways and faceted hull angles of the Fly, S and Verve lines. In place of unflinching modernity, what we have here feels far more classical and self-effacing and as the new entry point to the four-strong Magellano line, that’s exactly as it should be.

There’s a clean, pared back linearity to the external form and a modest confidence to the trim that makes this boat feel quite timeless. The block-coloured hull and the weightlessness of the upper deck also lend this boat a much lower profile than you might expect of a 60ft flybridge cruiser – and at the aft end of the superstructure, like impeccably debonair go-faster stripes, those elegant teak louvres have become something of a Magellano trademark.

Clearly then, this boat is designed to evoke a sense of seafaring heritage and yet when you step on board, the internal arrangement actually feels very fresh. The external cockpit, for instance, surfs the latest trend, with fore-and-aft furniture and a glass transom to keep the views wide open.

There’s also a pair of stools at the aft galley bar, which straddles the zone between inside and outside, creating a great spot to perch with a drink. And it’s good to see narrow stainless steel bars holding up the flybridge without obscuring the view from the cockpit, as well as twin side gates as standard for easy access to the pontoon.

When you make your way forward, the bow on the Azimut Magellano 60 feels larger than that of Azimut’s equivalent ‘Fly’ model. There’s space here for the full ship’s company of 12, thanks to a big island sunpad and a fold-up bench seat that provides a contained dining station ahead of the main deck screen. There’s also a sunshade for this section with elevated struts so you can walk beneath it without having to stoop, plus a set of frosted pop-up lights for a gentle glow when the sun goes down.

But what’s really impressive on this main deck is the way the Azimut Magellano 60 manages its beam. At 16ft 11in, it’s by no means wide by the standards of a 60ft flybridge cruiser but the clever use of narrow side decks and slim bulwarks enables the internal saloon to provide 10% more volume than the 60-footer from the parallel flybridge line.

That’s arranged around an aft galley, which is split across a central companionway, with a full-height fridge-freezer tucked into the starboard corner. At a stroke, that increases the openness at the port bar while also improving the space in the main galley for storage, work surfaces and appliances.

There’s all the gear you would expect in here, including an induction hob and dishwasher, but being an Italian boat, the Azimut Magellano 60 goes beyond mere practicality, with some delightfully curved Zeppelin-like storage cabinets that hang down from the ceiling.

With exterior styling by British studio, RWD, and interior design by New York-based architects, Bonetti/Kozerski, the Benetti Oasis 34m follows closely in the footsteps of the Oasis 40m.

Like its big sister, it adopts a clear commitment to informal conviviality, big views and a close connection with the sea – and at the heart of that concept sits Benetti’s ‘Oasis Deck’.

It all revolves around a dramatic infinity pool, set low in the centre of the transom with a glass aft bulkhead. Sunbeds orbit the pool’s forward edge leading to a large open cockpit with drop down bulwarks – and the way that space interacts with the saloon is equally satisfying.

Vast patio doors curve in a semi-circle around the aft end of the saloon, opening up an enormous aperture to integrate inside and outside spaces and provide 270-degree views toward the Oasis Deck from the sheltered seating.

Further forward, divided from the lounge by the galley, there’s a main deck owner’s cabin. Benetti likes to describe this as an “intimate cocoon” but its sheer scale warrants much greater fanfare than that.

The upper deck extends all the way above the owner’s cabin to the forepeak, where a bow lounge with sunshade provides a more private relaxation zone.

Head aft from here, beyond the bridge, the captain’s quarters and the second day heads, and you find yourself in a sheltered sky lounge with a dining table for ten plus doors leading out to a big open aft deck. And above all of this, the sundeck provides yet more alfresco party space.

In terms of the fit-out, there are of course options but, like the external form, the luxury here is deliberately understated. It comprises parquet and teak alongside bleached Canaletto walnut, ivory-coloured leather and custom Italian furnishings that take their inspiration from the sea.

And in terms of performance, the priority is again about quality and substance rather than crowd-pleasing flamboyance. Equipped with twin 1,380hp MTUs, you can expect a top speed of 16 knots and a range at 10 knots that will comfortably take you (and up to eight guests) across the Atlantic.

Miami to funky Nassau in the Bahamas is a straight-shot 180 miles. At the new Mystic M5200 rocketship’s top speed of 80mph – that’s 70 knots – you’d be there in just over a couple of hours. Arrive there for lunch, be home for dinner.

Fuel bill? What fuel bill? The tank holds 650 gallons – over 2,400 litres – though most pilots will likely run more efficiently at the boat’s 40-knot cruise speed.

This is the latest speed demon from Florida’s Mystic Powerboats, a needle-nosed 52-foot center console with a quartet of 600hp Mercury Verado V12s hanging off the transom. Yep, that’s 2,400 horsies in total.

It’s Mystic’s biggest center console to date, and joins the go-fast boat builder’s smaller M4200 and M3800 models. While this one is built for speed, it’s also built for comfort.

Here there’s more diamond-quilted, contrast-stitch upholstery than a Bentley Continental, individual seating for 24, a roomy cabin for overnighting, and more cupholders than a Dodge minivan. Yes, it would make a great fishing boat, but who’d want all that blood and guts messing-up the cushy, faux-teak flooring?

Best seat, make that seats, in the house? That would be on the forward deck where you’ll find three, stretch-out loungers, with armrests, headrests, and bolstered sides. A surprising omission? Seatbelts. At 80mph across the Gulfstream, you might need them.

Protected by that swoopy-looking carbon fibre hardtop and tall, wrap-around windscreen are three rows of racecar-like seats – three by the helm, and two rows of four. Then on the back deck there’s a stand-alone unit with eight more pews. That’s a lot of life jackets to carry.

How time flies. It’s eight years since we tested the original Riva 76 Perseo at the Cannes Yachting Festival, a sleek and stupendously competent piece of luxury engineering that gave us a terrific high-speed run in one-metre seas, like a thoroughbred racehorse out for a gallop.

It didn’t break a sweat. And the fit and finish were everything you would hope for in a Riva – tasteful, opulent, and beautifully executed. In fact there was something so marvellous about it that we gave it a Motor Boat Award. Unimprovable is the word that springs to mind.

Nevertheless, improvements are claimed for this new Riva 76 Perseo Super version. Various interior décor schemes are offered, which change the look quite markedly: light or dark lacquered oak panelling, for example, or lustrous rosewood if you prefer.

Dark mahogany detailing contrasts with the stainless steel. In a significant change to the original spec, the Perseo now comes with the option of a fourth cabin down below, with twin berths and its own ensuite, taking the place of the lower seating area and some useful stowage space on the port side.

Although this new lower layout won’t feel as spacious as the standard, it is bound to find favour. There is also a bar option for the cockpit, in place of the L-shaped sofa on the starboard side.

One thing that hasn’t changed on the new Riva 76 Perseo Super’s spec sheet is the choice of engines, which on our test of the original, which packed the larger 1800s, proved such a perfect match for this hull.

If it’s anything like as good as the original Perseo, the new version will certainly warrant its Super nomenclature. But is it any better? Hard to believe, but anything’s possible I suppose.

Having made its debut at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, the all-new Pearl 72 has taken its place between the popular Pearl 62 and the more luxurious Pearl 80.

As expected, the creative credits go to the usual design duo of Dixon Yacht Design for the hull, exterior and layout, and Kelly Hoppen for the interior styling, finishes and colour schemes.

To keep things simple, she has split these into three different looks for customers to pick from – Indulgence, Modern and Luxury.

The key highlights of the layout include a fantastically bright main saloon with an elegant aft lounge, a loft-style island galley amidships and a big dinette beneath the windscreen. There’s also a two-seat lower helm to starboard.

But in our opinion, the forward cabin, with its extra privacy, bigger footprint, higher ceilings and generous windows, is the more impressive of the two.

In addition to a transverse double guest cabin to port and a twin to starboard whose ensuite doubles as a day-head, there’s also an amidships crew cabin for two, plus a whopping aft tender garage that’s big enough to swallow a Williams 345, a Seadoo Spark and a Seabob.

There’s also a huge flybridge with a sturdy hardtop and various sunroof options, plus outdoor lounging spaces in the cockpit and on the foredeck terrace.

Like the rest of the range, the Pearl 72 is a full planing model and it comes with one of three V-drive options – either twin 1,400hp or 1,550hp V12 MANs or 1,622hp 1 MTUs for a working range of around 250nm at a fast cruise of 25 knots.

You can also choose to stabilise this model with either a Seakeeper 18 or Sleipner Vector Fins (or both). Basic tax-free prices run from £2.43 million for the less powerful engines and from £2.48 million for the bigger ones, but with a full set of typical ‘Med spec’ options, you can expect to pay more like £3.2 million.

Five have been sold to date – all with the bigger engines and all with the high-gloss black and grey satin veneers of the Indulgence package.

Not so long ago, buyers looking for a 60-80ft motor boat had a fairly simple choice to make. You just needed to decide whether you wanted a flybridge, a sportscruiser or a trawler yacht, and then pick from the half a dozen or so well established boat brands that built them. Job done.

These days, the sheer variety of choice on offer makes things rather trickier. Not only have the categories evolved to include sportsyachts, navettas, swift trawlers, adventure boats and countless other crossover craft, but the number of yards building them has increased exponentially too.

Sirena is a perfect case in point. Prior to 2017, very few people outside the industry had even heard of the Turkish manufacturer, which until that point had largely stayed in
the shadows, building boats for other brands.

But then it launched its own range of motor boats and in the five short years since then, it has grown to become a serious player in its own right. Its high-quality, high-volume cruising craft defy easy categorisation.

With their deep bulwarks, covered side decks, vertical windscreens and sturdy semi-displacement hulls, they share certain characteristics with traditional trawler yachts.

On the other hand, with their voluminous cabins, big hull windows, cutting edge interiors and 25-30-knot performance, they have just as much in common with modern flybridge boats.

As if that wasn’t enough, its latest model, the all-new Sirena 78, takes things to another level – literally. Thanks to a top deck that can be left open, semi-enclosed or fully enclosed, it is effectively available as a tri-deck yacht, a conventional two-deck flybridge boat with a hard top or something in between.

Once you’ve settled on which of these variants you want, you then get to decide between multiple interior layout options and three different design themes.

Claimed to be the world’s first SAV, short for Sea Activity Vehicle, this rugged 96-footer is described by its builder, Hong Kong-based CL Yachts, as “not just another pretty boat”.

This Rambo-esque CLX96 is the new flagship of Cheoy Lee-owned CL, and comes from the drawing board of Milan-based industrial designer Jozeph Forakis, who did both the exterior and interior.

Love it, or hate it, it certainly has presence. With that polarizing plumb bow, reverse-angle deckhouse and matching pilothouse-cum-skylounge perched on top, it earns CL’s description of the yacht being “workboat chic”.

And it comes with no shortage of cool, innovative thinking with Forakis placing a huge focus on creating expansive entertaining and tanning zones.

Up on the foredeck there’s a vast, full-beam circular space with big, curvy sofas flanked by sizable sunpads. In front of that funky pilothouse, he’s put a new spin on the traditional Portuguese bridge with a huge space for loungers.

Behind the pilothouse there’s an equally-expansive deck with sofas, loungers and an outdoor kitchen. There’s more socializing space behind the main saloon, while the stern beach club deck looks big enough to land a Sikorsky. CL Yachts calls the CLX96 an explorer, but we think it’s also the perfect party boat.

One other twist is the completely open-plan, big-windowed saloon, with the galley forward and more oversized sofas up front in place of a helm station. Entertaining is definitely the yacht’s priority here.

Powering the composite-hulled CLX96 is a pair of muscular Cat C32s that can punch this all-new hull to a feisty top speed of 24-to-25 knots at full load, with 22-knot cruising.

Striking a balance between entertaining and privacy has long been a challenge for superyacht designers, but Dutch builder Feadship and the Harrison Eidsgaard design studio seem to have hit upon the ultimate solution.

By giving their new 87m EXPV concept two separate deckhouses, the designers and naval architects have created a unique proposition.

Of course, you don’t want to be kept completely apart from your guests, hence the ‘Glass Bridge’ walkway and central ‘Ocean Lounge’ beach club that connects the two sections.

A similar idea has been used on large sailing superyachts before, but EXPV takes it to the next level with each section including an upper deck as well as a main deck.

One key advantage of this is that the owner’s suite can include a helipad directly above the observation lounge without risk of collision with the mast, which is situated above the guest deckhouse.

Other star features include an integrated crow’s nest, which allows guests to enjoy spectacular views from atop the mast.

Revealed this week at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, EXPV is designated as an explorer yacht, with an impressive 6,000nm range and room for a pair of 13.5m tenders stored amidships above the beach club, which has platforms set above the waterline level, meaning they can be deployed when the waters are a little choppy.

“When we started this project, we took all the features you find on superyachts and threw them up in the air,” explains Peder Eidsgaard, co-founder of the Harrison Eidsgaard design studio.

“This is a yacht designed for experienced owners who like to spend long periods on board with guests who might join them for a week, a month or even more, so privacy was an essential consideration.

“In that context, it might seem like an extreme design because it looks very different, but if you examine the individual elements, they all make perfect sense.”

And if anyone can pull off such an ambitious project, it’s a yard like Feadship, who launched their 110m flagship superyacht Project 1010 earlier this year.

The Fort Lauderdale Boat Show is big. Really big. To give you some idea of how big – last year’s show had 1,300 boats from 1,000 exhibitors, representing 52 countries.

That’s before you even think about how you’re going to navigate the 90 acres of exhibition space or the 100,000 attendees milling around.

But fear not, MBY is here to help you pick through the humdrum and find the best of the best. These are the boats that are worth tracking down at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

The best new boats at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show

Astondoa 677 Coupe

With its impudent axe-bow, its swept superstructure and its breathtaking aft end, the Astondoa 677 Coupé has the look and feel of an automotive art installation.

On the inside, too, it is littered with sculptural fixtures and fittings that, from the cleats and the air vents to the gates and even the loo roll holders, feel more like thought-provoking mantelpiece curios than functional yacht accessories.

It’s still a practical cruiser though, with big fore and aft lounging zones, plus lavish six-berth accommodation and a choice between IPS drives and MAN V12s on straight shafts for easy 34-knot performance.

Whether through the vast hull windows or the extravagant cutaway bulwarks, there are big views everywhere you look. And with a choice of three or four cabins and a galley-up or down arrangement, it’s very easy to tailor it to your needs.

While the dramatic, wave-textured orange leather wall trim is likely to divide opinion, this spectacular new limited edition cruiser is not a boat you can ignore.

Cruisers 50 GLS

Wisconsin-based Cruisers Yachts knows that when you build a roomy 52-foot weekender-on-steriods, you’re going to have a small army of friends and family pleading to come aboard.

Which is why the outdoor galley in this impressive new Cruisers 50 GLS – the new flagship in the yard’s rapidly-expanding GLS series – features not one, but two electric grilles, two fridges – three if you add the one belowdecks – and ice maker and two sinks.

Completed just in time for its FLIBS 2022 debut, the 50 GLS joins a line-up that includes last year’s new Cruisers 34 GLS, the 38 GLS and 42 GLS.

Galeon 375 GTO

This is one swashbuckling Galeon that’s worth your pieces of eight. The brand new Galeon 375 GTO from Poland’s Galeon Yachts, is the second model in the builder’s emerging GTO line-up following the 2020 debut of its super-successful Galeon 325 GTO.

This feature-laden 37-footer is the latest from the drawing board of British yacht design legend, and Galeon go-to for the past 20 years, Tony Castro.

In addition to the new Galeon 375 GTO debuting at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, he’s also behind the all-new Galeon 800 Fly joining it at FLIBS.

Horizon FD110

Call it the light fantastic. The newly-splashed Horizon FD110 – the largest in the Taiwanese yard’s Fast Displacement (FD) series – floods its cabins on all three decks with so much light you’ll probably need sunnies in the bathroom.

From the drawing board of prolific Dutch designer, Cor D. Rover, this head-spinning 110ft superyacht boasts huge floor-to-ceiling windows all along the main deck, hull windows almost down to the waterline, and a pilothouse-cum-skylounge almost completely wrapped in dark-tinted glass.

With a top speed of 21 knots from her twin 1,600-hp Cat C32s, she’s not only fast, but looks fast. Rover has given the Horizon FD110 a bold, axe bow with a knife-like, wave-piercer, towering sides, and a long, low pilothouse with stealthy reverse-angle front glass.

Mystic M5200

Miami to funky Nassau in the Bahamas is a straight-shot 180 miles. At the new Mystic M5200 rocketship’s top speed of 80mph – that’s 70 knots – you’d be there in just over a couple of hours. Arrive there for lunch, be home for dinner.

Fuel bill? What fuel bill? The tank holds 650 gallons – over 2,400 litres – though most pilots will likely run more efficiently at the boat’s 40-knot cruise speed.

This is the latest speed demon from Florida’s Mystic Powerboats, a needle-nosed 52-foot center console with a quartet of 600hp Mercury Verado V12s hanging off the transom. Yep, that’s 2,400 horsies in total.

Pearl 72

UK boatbuilder Pearl Yachts showed us renderings of its new Pearl 72 back in September last year at the Cannes Yachting Festival. Rumour had it they’d showcase the finished thing in the Vieux Port this year, but alas it wasn’t to be.

Instead Pearl’s MD Ian Smallridge aims to woo a few American buyers, so will pull the silk off the new Pearl 72 at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, one-upping their domestic rivals Sunseeker and Princess Yachts.

Filling the gap between its smallest model, the Pearl 62, and her bigger sisters, the Pearl 80 and flagship Pearl 95, the all-new Pearl 72  should do well Stateside, though don’t mention it’s built in China.

Pursuit OS 445

Call it the Pursuit of happiness. Happiness in owning a boat that is, first and foremost, a lean, mean, capable fishing machine. Then, a close second, a well-equipped and versatile weekend cruiser.

The Pursuit OS 445 comes in as the new flagship of the OS-for-Offshore fleet, and the biggest boat of any kind to date from the prolific Florida-based builder that turned out its first craft back in 1977.

The 445’s fishing boat credentials are impressive. It features a deep, wide cockpit and more rod holders than the Andrea Gail.

Sunseeker 88 Yacht

The Sunseeker 88 Yacht uses the same basic hull mould as the Sunseeker 86 but with a whole new look, both to the exterior and the interior, as well as a very different layout on deck.

The exterior includes brand new hull windows and glass inset into the bulwarks that not only lighten the exterior look, they also let light through into the main deck and improve the views out to sea.

Round at the stern there is an awful lot going on too – a completely new moulding at the aft end of the boat gives the Sunseeker 88 Yacht an almost Transformer-like ability.

Vicem 55 Fly

Talk about a Turkish delight! The latest from Istanbul-based Vicem Yachts takes the yard’s lovely, long-running Vicem 55 Classic hardtop and plonks an oh-so elegant flybridge on the top.

The new Vicem 55 Classic Flybridge, making its debut at the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, looks even more like the traditional, salty Down East Maine lobster boat that inspired it.

In addition to the new lid, the big news here is that unlike other Vicems, it’ll be constructed only in fibreglass and not the cold-moulded mahogany the yard is famous for. Seems plastic construction means faster builds and less maintenance.

The 50’s hull is all new, from the computer screen of Cruisers’ design go-to, Donald L. Blount & Associates, who worked with the builder’s team of in-house designers.

They focused on building-in acres of comfy seating, including a big, U-shaped area in the bow, along with plenty of cockpit seating. One nice feature is that everything is on same level, with no steps to trip over.

Drop-down side terraces at the stern extend the cockpit width, and there’s genuine teak decking throughout to add to the boat’s upscale look and feel.

For weekends away, there’s a good-sized, seperate owner’s cabin in the bow with large, full-width windows in the roof, together an under-cockpit guest cabin with two singles. There’s only one head however, which seems stingy on such a party-friendly 52-footer. Get in line, buddy.

As seems to be the new norm on big, beefy dayboats, triple Mercury Verado V12 600s are called-in to do the pushing. Joystick control makes docking a breeze.

Since Cruisers, and its more upscale Cantius off-shoot, were snapped-up by boating behemoth MarineMax in 2021, sales have gone through the roof.

Expect demand for the Cruisers 50 GLS to be high. Even at an ambitious $2.1 million a pop.

Talking of which, a highlight is the lovely back deck that flows into the main cabin via semi-circular glass doors. It offers lots of shade, lots of sofas, and is just steps away from the dining area. Perfect for entertaining.

There’s huge top-deck space too, with a dining table, hot tub and bar and galley. Space-wise, it all feels more like a 150-footer.

Inside, the semi-customisable Horizon FD110 has beds for up to ten guests across five cabins, with the light-drenched owner’s cabin positioned well forward on the main deck, with four ensuite guest cabins below.

Rover and Horizon have certainly been busy these past few months. In addition to the FD110, the builder is also using the 2022 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show to debut the 110’s new kid brother, the FD100, and an FD80 Skyline.

The Pursuit OS 445 comes in as the new flagship of the OS-for-Offshore fleet, and the biggest boat of any kind to date from the prolific Florida-based builder that turned out its first craft back in 1977.

The 445’s fishing boat credentials are impressive. It features a deep, wide cockpit and more rod holders than the Andrea Gail.

Then there are the two massive 300-litre in-floor fish boxes, and 8,400 litres of refrigerated fish storage that includes a 280-litre cooled fish box in the transom.

For the non-fisherfolk in the party, the Pursuit OS 445 piles on the comfort with plenty of seating in the cockpit, up on the bow, and inside the cosy saloon.

One cool feature is the hydraulically-rising, massively-over-engineered window that opens-up the cockpit to the saloon. That, and the fold-down bulwark on the starboard side for hauling-in that hard-fighting swordfish you’ve just hooked.

Less impressive are the black-framed sliding windows in saloon, which look like an after-thought. Those and the faux teak on the saloon floors. Practical, yes – worthy of a million-pound-plus boat, not so much.

For overnighting, the accommodation below runs to a forward owner’s cabin, a separate, though rather bleak-looking guest cabin, and a spacious head and large shower.

But fishing is the focus here, and part of that is running fast to a favourite hole and wetting a line. To get there fast, the Pursuit OS 445 comes standard with triple Yamaha XTO 425s that can punch to a top speed of 43 knots and cruise comfortably at 26 knots.

What sets the 375 apart is the sheer flexibility and versatility of its deck space. That wide, aircraft-carrier-like bow makes for a huge U-shaped entertaining-slash-tanning space, while the rear cockpit deck stretches over 5 metres.

Now power down the side bulwark panels and you get another 5 metres of beam to play around on. There are Ibiza dance floors smaller than this.

And the cockpit sofa has more moves than Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, being able to slide back and forth, and flip its backrest to either side.

The 375 GTO’s hardtop is another piece of quite-brilliant design. In addition to the near full-width electric, sliding-glass sunroof over the helm, both side windows can drop down. Now open the windscreen door to the bow and, at speed, it’s like being in an open boat.

For overnights or weekends away, down below there’s a compact, but versatile cabin, with beds for four, a small galley, and a head with a separate shower. Headroom throughout is over 1.8 metres.

Powerwise, Galeon offers a pair of the latest Mercury Verado V12s packing 600 horses apiece. Top speed is claimed to be over 50 knots. And the whisper-quiet Mercs come with joystick control for easy docking.

All pretty impressive, and a guaranteed attention-grabber at FLIBS.

In addition to the new lid, the big news here is that unlike other Vicems, it’ll be constructed only in fibreglass and not the cold-moulded mahogany the yard is famous for. Seems plastic construction means faster builds and less maintenance.

Climb the teak-treaded steps up from the cockpit to the new flybridge, and you’ll find Vicem has gone big on space. To starboard up front, there’s a two-seat helm protected by a dark-tinted wrap-around screen.

Behind it, there’s a well-stocked wet bar, with fridge, icemaker, and electric barbie, while over to port, there’s a big L-shaped sofa. And it’s all nicely protected by a sturdy fibreglass hardtop.

Below, the layout is pretty much the same as with the Vicem 55 Classic, with a decent-sized cockpit at the stern, and sliding doors opening into the compact saloon. Here there are trad, opposite-facing settees that can convert to makeshift beds for the kids.

Steps go down to the lower galley – never a chef’s favourite location – and on to the big forward owner’s cabin in the bow. On the FLIBS boat, Vicem has ditched the midships twin-bunk cabin in favour of a VIP double.

There’s all change in the engine room as well. In place of twin Cummins with shafts, the Vicem 55 Flybridge switches to Volvo IPS 700 pods for lots more storage space. The big Volvos deliver a top speed of 26 knots with relaxed cruising at 20.

In fact, like the rest of the Grande line, it aims not just to integrate the various zones on board the boat but to eradicate the barriers that traditionally divide them.

While there are rewarding design choices all over, one of the key concepts on the Azimut Grande 36M is the semi-walkaround upper deck.

Running on the same level, obstruction-free, all the way from the bow to the stern, it creates a vast recreational space that is broadly split into three key entertainment zones.

On the external aft deck, there’s a pair of large, lounge-friendly sunbeds with a starboard wet bar. On the foredeck, there’s an outside dining area and yet more sun loungers. And in the centre of the deck, there’s an elegant skylounge that can be configured either as a media room or an indoor dining zone.

In both cases, you get panoramic views, as well as windows that open up entirely. Back down on the main deck, the side decks run slightly forward of amidships before rising up to the next level. This leaves the bow area free for a full-beam, wide-body owner’s cabin.

This comes with a central walkaround bed, a desk, a seating area and his and hers bathrooms, plus views on both sides through unbroken floor-to-ceiling windows.

Here, as elsewhere, the use of rounded furniture and curved bulkheads augment that sense of space and the flexibility of the deck layout also provides the owner with plenty of ways to tailor the interior to suit their lifestyle.

Equipped to carry up to ten guests in five staterooms, as well as up to five crew in the forward part of the lower deck, the Azimut Grande 36M promises cruise-friendly running dynamics too.

In fact, as part of Azimut’s Low Emission Yacht range, which uses the high-efficiency D2P Displacement-to-Planing hull, plus carbon fibre to reduce weight, Azimut is claiming that it’s new ‘barrier-free’ superyacht is able to reduce CO² emissions by 15-30% compared to traditional yachts of a similar size.

Update: The Azimut Grande 36M will be making its US debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.

Who can forget the scene from Spielberg’s 1975 fright-fest Jaws? The one where, at the first sight of the Great White, Sheriff Brody utters that immortal line to Quint: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat”.

It just might have been the inspiration behind Viking Yacht’s decision to supersize its award-winning 54 Convertible, into the new Viking 64 Convertible. Hull no1 made its global debut in November at the 2021 Fort Lauderdale Boat Show and at the recent Miami Boat Show, Elliott Maurice took the chance to take a full tour..

The design formula has pretty much always stayed the same. Soaring, wave-crushing bow, blacked-out, Mask-of-Zorro wrap-around windows, uncluttered decks, and a mile-high fish-spotting tower.

But this new Viking 64 Convertible takes the concept to the next level. Using some serious new in-house Computational Fluid Dynamic software to refine the hull’s running surfaces, the big Viking is said to go through feisty waters faster and smoother. Not that speed is too big a concern when you have a pair of 2,000-horsepower, V12 MTU M96Xs turning the props.

While Viking hulls have always had the strength and rigidity of a Wells Fargo bank vault, the new 64 Convertible is the arguably the stiffest yet. The hull and deck are now joined with through-bolts every three inches and glassed-over from the inside for a stronger union than Barack and Michelle.

With the 64, Viking has also upped the luxury quota, realising hardy fishing folk want the comforts of home when the rods are stowed.

That means the option of an enclosed, air conditioned flybridge, air conditioning in the mezzanine “observation” cockpit, Seakeeper stabilising, and a quartet of spacious, high-luxe staterooms and a trio of heads.

Did we mention the 50-inch pop-up HD TV? Fighting fish has never been so stylish…
