The Azimut<\/a> Magellano 66<\/strong> is aimed squarely at the new market that has emerged for trawlers with more contemporary styling.<\/p>\n

The modern exterior styling is by Cor D Rover, while Azimut and Pierluigi Ausonio were responsible for the dual mode hull \u2013 different from preceding Magellano hulls in that it sports two chines and is less rounded than previous forms.<\/p>\n

If the intention of the Magellano 66 was to bridge the gap between so called \u2018serious\u2019 trawlers from the likes of Grand Banks<\/strong><\/a> and Fleming, and the more avant-garde trawlers from the high volume production builders, then the Italian company has succeeded brilliantly.<\/p>\n

First rate engineering and construction underpins the 66\u2019s serious side, while the fashionable (although slightly too subdued for my tastes) walnut interior feels far removed from the styling inside the more venerable rivals.<\/p>\n

What really sets the 66 apart though, and makes it a serious long distance contender or a great holiday home in equal measure, is the boat\u2019s spectacular level of storage inside and out.<\/p>\n

It would take a whole report\u2019s worth of words to list it all, but suffice to say that every nook and cranny has been utilised, and whatever deck locker or wardrobe or drawer you delve into, it\u2019s invariably larger than you might have hoped.<\/p>\n

Fuel for thought<\/h2>\n

In an effort to standardise the engineering installation, Azimut likes to stick with a single engine option, in this case Volvo\u2019s D13 800hp diesels.<\/p>\n

Those pushed our lightly loaded Magellano 66 to 23 knots, so don\u2019t anticipate any more. More importantly, its sturdily constructed dual mode hull is happy to cruise at any speed from 10 knots through to 20 knots.<\/p>\n

Foredeck seating is a useful extra socialising space<\/p><\/div>\n

The surprise was finding that the hull is so fuel efficient throughout the range. So at 9 knots, say, it burnt 23% less fuel than a full displacement Nordhavn 63<\/a><\/strong>, yet at its 18 knot fast cruising speed it also consumed 20% less fuel than a deep-vee Fairline Squadron 65 does at the same speed.<\/p>\n

A full-beam master cabin is the star of the accommodation<\/p><\/div>\n

That\u2019s great news because it allows owners to slow to a crawl for long distance cruising (circa 1,000 miles @ 9kn) but also to nip along fast enough to ignore adverse tides and a strong headwind.<\/p>\n
